Help!! Atomic Balanze 9.7?? or no....

Hey folks! Like other have said, I'm glad to have found the website! Here's my question for ya'll to ponder and help (yes, I'm from the south - NC to be exact)
Now, I've grown up skiing... in the NC/Va hills that is - so it's something I learned as a child. I've also been out west and skiing in Washington and Colorado and have learned what REAL skiing is like - although it took me a while to learn how to ski on powder as opposed to ice :o)
It varies from year to year - I may go skiing once this year, 5 times next year including out West - and then none the next... depending on shedules and budget and work and family and the such!
What kind of a skier am I? I generally just say I'm a type II skier - advanced... but I would never say I'm an expert. Greens, blues, blacks - I'll do most of them, but I generally stick to the blues - they're the most fun for me to race around and goof off with without killing myself. But I do enjoy a good challenge and a black in there - especially here on the East Coast because they're easier - it's definitely more of a challenge out west. I don't really push the envelope too far - I have fun, but I usually don't fall when I ski... which probably means I'm not pushing myself as hard or taking many risks - but after 2 knee surgeries, I try to stay sain.
This year I traded in my snowboard ( took that up after the second knee surgery - but I'm rehabed out, feeling a lot stronger and good as new - so back to skiing) - and bought skies. The first ones were a bust... they were heads, and just too soft... too 'beginnerish' - I don't know anything about the equipment, so I'm at the mercy of the store. They are a local, family owned and operated store and they've been very nice and worked with us well. I've traded back in my boots because they were uncomfortable and now we're working on the skies. They don't carry K2 - so that's not an option. But they do carry Atomic and Head, Dynaster, Fisher, and some others.
I'm about 5"4 and 140 - so I prefer to ski on 150s or something close. They've got a pair of Atomic Balanze 9.7s they can trade in for me right now. I was researching and hoping to get the ski just below that... but they can't get it anymore. It's a great deal - and I can look into Dynaster and Head skis if necessary... but this is the deal for the moment. But, they're going to order them just for me - so it's not an option to go try them out 'just to see' kinda thing. They're being really helpful... but I wanted to get opinions.
How would this ski rate for me? It all sounds fine... I like to go hard from time to time, and skiing here at home - it's a lot of ice... but I definitely like to stroll and carve part of the time too. WE do take trips out west to the good powder though too - so I need a really good all around ski to last me for years! I don't really understand the technical terms... so I just need a little help - and I want to do my homework this time so that I completely depend on them to suit me up right. The only other ski they had was the beginner Atomic - and I already tried the beginner route... and it was HORRIBLE! I felt like a brick skiing down the mountain having to lift and turn!!

Sorry so long... please help - we're going to be renegotiating everything on Thursday! :o)

Ski advice?? Anybody? Please

So today's thursday - and I haven't gotten any replys... either that's not a popular ski and people don't really know - or maybe my post was just too long.
If anybody has advice about this ski, please let me know today!!! Come on, it's my birthday too :D

Happy Birthday, Kristi!

Let's see if we can get this rolling for your special day.

Whatever ski you get, I hope you have good boots. That's even more important. And don't just pick out any old boot, based on price or hear say. Be sure to go to a good, reputable bootfitter who can make sure you have the right boot for your feet and your stance, and who can modify them to fit your needs.

As for skis -- the best way to choose a ski is to demo. Different people prefer different things, and that's really the best way to find the one that suits your needs and style. That said -- even though I haven't skied them, I haven't heard great things about the Atomic Balanz 9.7's; the Balanz M 11's get much better reviews. Does your ski shop have those?

Anyone else have any thoughts? Let's help this Diva on her birthday!!!! (Hope it's a good one!)

I'm sorry the gear divas dropped the ball for a couple days!:o

On to the Balanze ski.
I think you'll find it to be a good ski for your ability and size. When I demoed the Balanze line of skis I didn't get on that particular model but I got on the 7.5(?) and the 11. I found both of them to be quick to turn and very responsive. The 9.7 should be good for busting through crud, and yet hold an edge on ice. This is supposed to be a great ski to take you from II to III, and should be a good confidence builder.

If you found a deal on it, go for it! I wouldn't hesitate if I were in your shoes(or ski boots as it were)

thanks!! keep it rolling of you have more advice!

 thanks guys for jumping in there! I really appreciate it.
I DO have great boots. Those I have been able to demo and I didn't like the diabello or the atomics - but I did love the head boots I've got. They seem to fit well... so that I'm pleased with.
I just didn't love the Head skis I demoed first. If I ski these and they don't work - I can still take them back... but with the way my season is going, it would have to be after ski season that I traded again - and the shop is going out of there way to order things for me and fit me correctly!
I just wasn't sure if I could get an 'expert' ski as it's called... I'm comfortable skiing - and I learned young... but I would never call myself an expert. I certainly would love a ski that lets me get to that level though.
So I feel like it's mostly positive feedback...
I'm sure if I were closer to the slopes and could get out there more often, I would love to get more technical into the gear... and have my ski closet look more like my shoe closet -- but I'm not there yet! We're moving this summer (at the mercy of the AirForce) and my husband and I are praying for mountains!
Thanks guys! It's been a great 27th birthday thus far!!

Happy birthday!

Wish I could tell you anything helpful about the Balanze 9.7, but I don't know anything about them. What skis are you on now?

what I ski now...

None -
I trialed some Heads... XR50s I believe? I don't know but I think they were Jr. skis after I started researching them?? The folks are really nice where I'm going and knowledgable - I think she grabbed these by mistake because they were 150s like I wanted...
Anywho - they were awful. I had to pick up to turn - they naturally wanted to snow plow it felt like?? I've been told they're 'soft' skies - I'm so new to the technology of the gear, that doesn't mean a whole lot to me - but I would have done better on my water skies down the mountain than those skis! As long as I took giant turns - as in traversed all the way down the mountain at a very slow speed... I could turn'em - there was NOTHING I could do quickly though.
Needless to say - they weren't the right skies...
I've always skied rentals in the past. Nothing special with those - but they were definitely better than the ones I trialed a few weeks ago!
I had a snowboard ... so I traded that in and decided to buy skis this go around now that my knee is rehabed back and good as new!

Fischer Vision 70

I've had someone suggest this ski - she gave a great write up after demoing them... size 152
Seems fair enough?
Any thoughts on this ski?
We're still going around with the ski shop... no decisions made at this point. I've asked them to look into this ski and some other stuff...
Thanks folks ;o)

Choosing a ski that is right for you!

Hi, I have skied the B11 by ATOMIC and loved it! I have the ATOMIC METRON9 and they were great in the crud, but now ski the BEAUTY by NORDICA. I am 5'6", 66yrs & 189LB...yes, heavy, but still skiing and love it! Trying to lose thelbs, but 5 surgeries in 4 years did not help with the weight. I have been having fun on the BEAUTY, skiing the blues and blacks at TYPE II speeds, but find that when I want to step it up to ski with the guys I am too heavy for them and they are not as stable on the snow. Last Saturday at OKEMO in the "sugar" and "stuff" they were fine while skiing at average speed. I am split between keeping them or selling them for a more all round ski for my weight. I am planning to get a good EXPERCISE plan going and see if I can los the lbs. and maybe really enoy the ski. The B 11 ATOMIC was the most fun.... at 148CM The ATOMIC ski really HELD on the ice. I like my METRONS for the ice and crud skiing. They are heavy, but do hold. SUGGESTION: Wait until next year... go to a Mountain DEMO DAY and demo 2 or 3 models in the time available... That is how I found the B11's. (I won the BEAUTY skis and sold my B11, before I tried the BEAUTY)... I should have listened to MAX CAPACITY! He knows his skis and can watch you ski and tell you the ones you would like best. COME to OKEMO for a MARY DAVIS Demo day (Demos are free on a mountain DEMO DAY) !! (If you can fit it in or look for a DEMO day at your Local mountain!)
