Helmets wired for music

Happy Feet

Thanks to info from the Ski Diva I have upgraded my Beori Tactic ski helmet to be wired for sound. Silly me. Why didn't I do this sooner?

Now the question is: Is the a bike helmet out there that is wired? Earbuds are unsafe, and wouldn't tunes be great on a 50 milers?

I think that riding on the road with tunes is incredibly dangerous - buds or tuneups, it would simply not let you hear the cars around you.

Please be safe on the roads - too many of us have died or been horribly injured due to cycling accidents. We need to be more alert than the drivers of the cars/trucks out there as we are more vulnerable.

Thanks for your concern. I am really careful when I ride, and have never ridden with buds. What I like about the tuneups is that they provide background and do not interfere with conversation or awareness of my surroundings.

I ski with tunes but would never ride my bike with tunes and don't know of any bike helmet that are wired for sound.

I agree--never, never on a bicycle, especially on a road bike. I've been hit by a car once while riding my bike on the road (fortunately only sustained minor physical injuries), and I very much prefer to be 100% aware of my surroundings. Especially on a windy day or in a more urban area, it's sometimes hard to hear a car coming from behind, and not all drivers are courteous to cyclists. Some enjoy playing "chicken" with cyclists and like to startle them by driving by as close as they can get.

I don't think you'll find a cycling helmet that's wired for music. It's just too much of a liability for the manufacturers, and in some states, it may be illegal to ride a bike on the road with headphones/earbuds, for very good reasons.

Again, I have never ridden with any type of music device for safety reasons. And I live in a very rural area in New Hampshire.

But since these aren't in the ear, and can be turned very low or off I think they may be worth a try. Why else would Oakley make the sunglasses with MP3 and BlueTooth hookups?

It really is up to you but I'd guess the sunglasses are meant for running and other types of sports but I really don't know. I just know that I've had so many close calls on my bike that the idea frightens me. If you know Oakley makes the sunglasses why not just try that?

The reason I hadn't looked closely at them is that they were men's models and over $300. I was just on the Oakely site, and now they are down to $200 and have women's models. Still pricey when the Tatic upgrade was $30.

I don't bike so I dunno about any of that stuff, but be safe out there! Here's a multisport (biking included) helmet with audio, and here's a biking specific one.

Years ago I rode with a WalkMan.....twice.....and didn't even use ear pieces. I found it terribly distracting and it really did interfere with my ability to hear traffic behind me. So for me, I'll never use music by any method when I road ride again, and the type of mountain biking I do is pretty harsh so the electronics probably wouldn't hold up.

Sorry, gals.

I ride with tunes most of the time, both on and off road. However, I always have them at a volume that lets me hear everything going on around me and allows me to have complete conversations (just like skiing).

I just use behind-the-neck headphones. They are slim enough to fit under my helmet and don't interfere with my sunglasses either.

Thanks for the upbeat (pardon the pun) response.

What brand are your headphones, and where did you buy them?

They are Phillips SBC HS386. I think I got them at Walgreens or something like that. $14.99 or so.

Motorola makes a few nice stereo bluetooth headphones. They go in the ears, and wrap over the ear and behind the head.

For you ladies who might do double duty with your phone as your MP3, it'll switch to voice calls as well.

Again, I don't recommend it for road use. Watch out for those cars! Perhaps maybe more for a bike trail.

they should come up with some kind of integrated speakers on the handlebars, so you can hear the music, but also whats going on around you.

success

I did some serious web surfing, and found a pair of Kos P9 for a whopping $9.99. If you go to their web site, you will see that they make a couple of different pairs that are made for wearing while being active. They wrap in back, wrap over the ear, and fit into the ear. They do not block road or other outside noise. In fact when I tried them out today as I was riding into the wind, the wind blocked out most noise - just like any other day on the bike. What made it really sweet was that turning directly out of the wind and to slightly into the wind and up the hill, the shuffle changed from soft jazz to JJ Cale and Eric Clapton. Yes, just that boost I needed. I wouldn't wear them on busy streets, but seeing that I saw a whole 10 cars on my 16 mile ride today I am glad for the company:clap: .
