Helmet Hair

Anyone else have issues with Helmet Hair? For a while I carried mousse and a hairdryer in my boot pack, but alas there is a conspiracy against electric outlets in the bathrooms in the places where I ski, so unless I want to dry and fluff in public, which I actually did once at Wildcat, that's out.

Now I take a hat, one with a brim, in my bootpack and just plop that on top as I leave the lodge.

But what to do at lunch time??? So many problems, so little time ....

When my hair was quite short, I would dampen it in bathroom and dry it under the hand dryers (if available) for a quick fix. My hair is so fine that it just gets plastered to my scalp. I'm always jealous of those women whose hair looks great even if they've had a helmet or hat on.

I just go eat lunch - bad hair and all. I don't really look at other people's hair, so I figure they aren't looking at mine either. I figure that most people there have hat or helmut hair anyway. Besides, if I can provide amusement to others - then great!::D

I have to say that when it comes to skiing, my hair is a lost cause (see the helmet in my picture? That's not just for safety!). Ever see curly hair when it gets mushed and sweaty? It ain't pretty. When I take my helmet off at lunch, children actually cry!

When I'm done for the day, I do everyone a favor and put a hat on to walk to the car.

I'm with Lynn, nothing better than a baseball cap. Last years was pink and from Atomic. They like to put crazy saying on the back. Last year was Menage trois. It was to advertise the triplet skis that they make. Can't wait for this years.

Hat hair here. Also a lost cause while skiing. It's a horror, a big frizzy mess. Even with a bucket of gel on, it's bad. I used to keep a wide stretchy headband in my jacket to use during lunch to keep down some of the frizz. Then I just gave up.

I have the priviledge of wearing an Okemo Women's Alpine Adventure baseball cap! :D

My hair is thin and in the morning, it looks terrible until I wash and dry it. On days when I ski, I don't wash it till i'm done skiing. So the baseball cap it is! I wear it to and from the slopes. As for lunch time - oh well - my hair looks terrible - but I really don't care!

Isn't the mark of a true Ski Diva in how she skis - not in how she looks!! :p

Guys never worry about helmet hair - so why should we? ;)

Like my Dad always says (this would be Jim, Lil's hubby) "Guys who are bald in the front of thier heads are thinkers. Guys who are bald in the back of their heads are lovers. Guys who are bald in the front and the back of thier heads - think they are lovers."

So how much hair does your guy have? Is he a thinker? A lover? Or does he think he is a lover?
Never mind . . . Too much information!

My husband has a full thick head of grey hair. What does that mean?

As for me and my helmet hair. I embrace it!

Why not? It looks better than a head injury from not wearing a helmet:D

What I don't get are the guys who wear no helmet and no hat -- even on frigid days. What, are they worried about ruining their hair-do? First, don't they get cold? And second, don't they worry about cracking their skulls open?

My husband is much more worried about his helmet hair than I am. Mine is pretty long so I wear it in a pony tail and it looks pretty much the same before and after a helmet. Plus, it's easiest to just avoid all mirrors. I can't imagine carrying stuff around to fix my hair when skiing. If I started looking in the mirror and trying to fix things, I'd never get back on the slopes.:o

It's one of the reasons I keep my hair long(ish) - I too have very fine hair that just gets plastered to my head. Only problem with long hair, though, is that my ends freeze

No, skiing definitely is not a fashion show. On the snow, all that matters is movement. I don't understand people who compliment my boots on their color. This has happened several times. They have no clue.

I don't worry about it either, but it can be a bit scarecrow when I take the helmet off! I always carry a beanie in my pocket for lunch or apres.
I can never resist a nice woolly hat - We sorted out our stuff last week before the new season and between us we have FIFTEEN!

I keep it long enough to wear in two braids. I comb through a leave-in conditioning product, then braid it, that keeps it nice and neat most of the day, then when I wash it in the evening, the damage is minimal.

Just a quick add on from a newbie on hemet hair. (love this! so much better than all the "guy" stuff) Because I wear a ski helmet all winter and a white water helmet much of the spring/summer, I finally "gave up" and cut my hair short. Bummed my husband out, but I like going to the ladies room, fluffing my hair with my hand (with the water sports, I go the car and use a bit of gel I keep in my glove compartment) and I feel ready to face the after-ski family scene without looking too horrible. Funny, even though my husband was bummed all my gal friends, especially those I ski with, thought it was a great idea!

Welcome!!!

Another solution to the helmet hair is to go the other way and grow it out. Put it in a ponytail or just pull the front back and tie it, and you can call it good in or out of the helmet!

Are there any men out there who favor short hair on women? My (second) husband prefers my hair long, which at my age requires color, blow dry, flat iron, and curling iron to look pretty. My (first) husband's current wife and I were sitting together at a Bat Mitzvah this past Saturday and she was saying that he doesn't want her to cut her hair either. Maybe it's just MY husbands :D but I wonder....

I agree with the most guys like short hair. And, speaking of fashion, one of my great ski buddies talks about how her husband bought some tight fitting bunny-type suit when she started out. She figured pretty quick to get something more comfortable. Personally, I am one of the last hold outs for bibs, 'cause the snow doesn't go down my pants. It broke my heart in my accident this year when they cut them off...things were bad enough without getting my gear wrecked!
