Helmet Fit

Another while I'm thinking of it item!

See I was reading about washing socks, which reminded me of getting new socks, which reminded me of my old socks getting too big, which reminded me....

HELMETS get too big too when you lose weight!

I was going to tack it into the sock thread, but then it occurred to me that if you needed to know that your helmet could have started out just fine, and get too big, well, you know, it just doesn't belong in the sock department!

Season before last, prior to even really seriously considering losing the weight, I realized that my nose hurt whenever I turned my head while wearing the old helmet that my daughter wasn't using anymore because the helmet didn't turn, so my goggles didn't turn either when I turned my head. Here I was skiing in a helmet that didn't fit! So, I decided that last season was the year for a new helmet for me. No more "hand me down helmet."

I bought a nice, snug fit when I saw some helmets at Costco for a reasonable price, sometime early in the weight loss process, well before the season started last year.

By the end of the season, I was back to the sloppy fitting helmet, and ordered a Smith Variant from SAC -- I LOVE the venting, and the snug fit! This one's adjustable, and can get much smaller, though I really do hope that my head is as small as it's going to get now! (even though it's okay with me if the rest of me gets some smaller)

I won't start another one to mention boot fit changes too, since we talk about how important boot fit is all the time, but even 25 pounds makes a HUGE difference in the way your boots fit, so keep an eye on those too! I found that while my heel stayed put early this season, my ankles slopped around a lot in there until we added some padding, and that made a BIG difference in ski response.

Huh, I haven't noticed a difference in my helmet fit. Interesting! The boots on the other hand, ay yi yi those were a mess...

How much weight do you have to lose to lose weight in your head?:laughter: For boots I definitely understand it though.

I don't know if it's because of weight loss, but I think they do pack out a little. I'm on my second Giro 9, the last one had gotten a little looser than it was when new.

I've lost 13kg in the last 18weeks .... my helmet still fits like the first day. Maybe the liner has changed .... maybe if its a cheap helmet the quality of the liner is inferior?
I have 4 helmets .... 2 from R.E.D. and one Smith. All came with some additional padding that can be fixed onto the liner by velcro if the helmet does not fit 100%. I think the additional padding is a very nice feature.

Can't begin to guess how much to make a real difference in head size, but considering how a face changes as one gains/loses weight, why not the rest of the head?

Weight loss/gain happens to a whole body...

I suppose... it just doesn't seem like there is much fat around the scalp. I dunno:noidea: I wasn't trying to be obnoxious, it just struck me as funny for some reason.

FYI, cheaper helmets use thick, soft padding that both pack out and deteriorate with both time and sweat. Make sure your helmet fits snugly and plan to replace it every 2-5 years due to sweat and sun exposure. Obviously, replace it immediately in the event of a head-strike crash, even if it looks undamaged. The inner foam will compress sometimes without showing any sign on the outside. This dramatically reduces it's effectiveness in the event of another head-strike. Is your head worth chancing that???
