Have you ever missed a ski season?

Could be for any reason: school, pregnancy, location, finances, injury. If so, what kept you from the slopes?

I missed a LOT of seasons -- about 15, I think. I stopped skiing first because of pregnancy, and then a lot of personal stuff got in the way. Didn't start again til about 12 years ago. So even though I first skied when I was 13, I only have a total of about 22 seasons in.

What about you?

I started skiing the year I turned 9. I skied all the way through high school, and then once college started, I had no money and I was really far away from anything I would consider skiable (I was in school in Indiana), then I started up gain after I met Tim about 4 years ago. In total, there was about 10 year gap. After school, I was in DC, and did not have the money to re-gear myself or the transportion to get to the slopes.

I've been skiing since 1980. We lived in Ohio but traveled all over NY, W.Va., Canada, the western US, Ky, and Indiana. My home mtn was Perfect North Slopes in Indiana.

All those years I didn't miss a season, even the year I had a torn rotator cuff. After retiring I moved to Colorado to ski and had my only season ending injury, an acl. I still managed 30+ days of skiing that year before it ended in mid Jan.

I started skiing in 1984. My husband(then boyfriend) wanted me to be more adventurous and I was the type to try something new.

Trouble is, he got me interested just before he got a new snowmobile, so I was left without anyone to ski with. I went occasionally, but didn't really get back into it until my little sister took it up in the early 80's followed by my niece and nephew. There's nothing like Young people to get you back into something you enjoy.

My husband would still prefer to snowmobile, but he skis with me a lot these days.

So, my reason was.............lack of ski buddies.

Never missed a season since 1964. Been some lean years, but always got out. We had a local bump of a hill, ski there until I learned there were bigger things out there and could drive myself there. Since 1981 when I joined a travelling ski club, its been continuous. One year I only 3 different places, our local hill, Trois Vallee France and Whiteface. Its a long way from our local 200ft bump to trois vallee!! It made for an interesting winter when people would ask "Where did you ski this year?". The was a personal problem year. Things got better after that. And continue to be that way. I do know of women that will "try" to plan the pregancy around the season. But as the old Indian squaw says: Him come when him ready! Plan or no plan.

Let's see. After starting in winter 83-84, I missed the winters of 91-92 and 92-93 b/c of injury (physically, it didn't last 2 years, but mentally, it did). Missed about 5 years in the late 90s/early 2000s b/c like Sheena I was a starving recent grad/student and living in a skiing mecca (not). And I missed 03-04 thanks to an ill-timed end-of-summer injury. I rebounded much faster after this injury.

I'm not sure I "missed" those seasons. I simply gave it up! It was too hard with a non-skiing significant other!

Well, that was ONE of the last straw that broke the camel's back! So, after we broke up, I fullly intended to re-start skiing. But lack of snow and a mountain bike injury (minor) made me miss the first season.

So, yeah, one season I actually missed!

I started going to the Rockies in '84. I haven't missed a season since then. In the beginning it was for 1 week, then grew into 2 weeks, now I feel cheated if I don't get in 3 whole weeks of skiing. So when I broke my ankle on my snowboard in the middle of our 2nd trip in 2005, I was a little on surly side. I think I hold the record for the number of swear words in one sentence. I skied 13 instead of the usual 24 days that year.

I missed many seasons in the 1960s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. I probably skied about a dozen times in the 60s and again in the 80s, a few times in the 70s, but only once or twice in the 90s (my first husband didn't ski or snowboard), so when I really took up the sport in the 2004/2005 season, I finally fulfilled my lifelong ambition to ski and become a "real skier" (as opposed to the snowplower that I was back in the day). Better late than never!

I missed a few after moving to Wash DC in 1990. I skied really only once a year from then until 94/95, when I had a baby and didn't ski at all. I don't think I skied from then until we moved back to Colorado in 2000 (had another baby in 98).

Started back up in the 00/01 season, with the kids this time, and hopefully I won't have to skip another season until I'm dead or something.

Skied from age 5 to 15 in NJ only (60s & 70s), then it got more expensive and I probably got distracted.

Didn't ski for about a dozen years and when I did again it was in Colorado in October during a business trip (1990-1). What a difference: snow instead of ice/hardpack, mountains instead of blips, ski brakes instead of leashes, skis weren't taller than I was. Was in CO for most of that winter. Definitely got the bug all over again. It'll take something incredible to get me to stop ever again.

Not since...1993 I think. When I was in college, I had a season or two where I just didn't have the money, didn't live close, and didn't have anyone to ski with and it just didn't happen. And a few years with just a handful of ski trips until I moved out to UT.

And since then, I've had a couple short seasons due to knee injuries, but even the one where I had ACL reconstruction in October, I ended up skiing about 25 times that spring starting in April. So it really wasn't that bad.

I started when I was around 12(1968) and skied on and off for alot of years. When my son was old enough to ski we didn't miss a year until I had a herniated disc in 98-99.I was right back at it the next year though and 1 year after that I started teaching skiing!

I skied every year from age 6 to age 18, when had a bit of an ACL issue. So I missed one year to get it fixed and then got back on the hill. Then I went out with a boy who decided he didn't want to go skiing with a girl who might be better at skiing than him. So we didn't go for 5 years. Then I came to my senses and made him go, and he quite liked it. But not as much as me. So now I need a new boy who likes to ski all the time.

Oh boy does that sound familiar. I dated a guy who swore he loved to ski, but every time I planned a trip, he had an excuse and we did something else. I got him to go one time and he got there (on a powder day no less) and decided he "wasn't in the mood" and didn't ski. He still claimed he loved skiing when I dumped him, but the only real explanation is that he was afraid I was going to kick his butt (or actually had no idea how to ski at all).

I now have a husband who is as obsessed with skiing and biking as I am. I can't imagine it any other way. NEVER again am I missing out on skiing or riding because of some boy's insecurities.

Yep, no boy is going to stand between me and the mountain. What is it with boys who can't hack girls that can do sport? Surely there is nothing greater than a hot chick who can rip it up with the best of them???

I started skiing three seasons ago and haven't missed one in that time. My maximum # ski days was approx. 25 for last year. Next season I am making it a higher priority.

I missed 03-04, 04-05 and skiied once in 05-06.

Injury kept me out.:(

Could be a slow season this year

Not to be a total bummer...I am worried about this season. Two weeks ago I had my first ever epileptic seizure. No explaination, no reason known yet...As a result, I am unable to drive a vehicle...which has put me on medical leave from my job (without pay in another 4 weeks). This could be a bad season unless I find someone with a willingness to allow me to tag along for the ride up into the hills of COLORADO!!!!

Oh...and I learn how spin wool into gold so I can buy a pass.
HAHAHA.
I am sure that it will work itself out somehow though...you know how us diehards are, we find a way (with a little help from the Big man)!

As for your seizures....I have seizures, too! Just started 4 years ago and I didn't drive for 3 1/2 years. They are under control now (pretty much) and it does get easier! Anyway, I'll be here for ya' if you need to pm anytime! Hang in there!
