Have you ever just gone PLUNK!??????

Ok. So it happened to me. Skiing along, doing great and then just before the lift line going straight I caught an edge on my outer left ski and went plunk!

The guy behind me goes, "JESUS!" and then asked if I was ok. Next thing I knew, my wonderful new husband had kicked off his skis and was at my side asking if I'd hit my head (which I hadn't....thank GOD!), but I was in a very weird position. Obviously a hard hit that threw me to the ground and that has left me a little sore....but how the heck did that happen? There was NOTHING there!

I'm baffled!

...I was standing in a lift line... I actually really hurt myself, I landed on my hip where I had happened to put my camera. My camera made it out unscathed, but my hip had a bruise and I felt a stich in my stride for quite a while afterwards. I still have no idea how I fell, I was standing in line minding my own business. :noidea:

Have I ever just gone "plunk?" Ummmmmm ------ heck, yeah! The old saying "snow snake got me." The main difference is that I now seem to specialize in high speed falls :( And like bravosarah, I seem to go down on the hip for that wonderful one-point landing  And, NVG, I also specialize in the left outside edge...

Does the "surprise factor" actually spare us from worse injury??? (there's no fighting these kinds of falls) Well, bravo, my hip bruise resolved, but I still have the hip pain as you did. (Are you okay now??) Can't take a chance, going to orthopedics for x-ray on Thursday  If a bone bruise (periosteal), it's gonna hurt for a lonnnngggg time. But have to rule out any hairline fractures of the femur head. GOOD FREAKIN GRIEF....

I'm not even going to THINK about what will become of me if I am officially put on the DL.....I've skied with the injury for 2 weeks, but it's not getting better. Time to find out, I guess.

SO - if the ego is bruised, that's one thing. Snow snake gotcha. There are a lot of body parts that don't heal so fast. Cross everything for me.....I'm not one to go to doctors unless completely necessary.

Wow! I hope you are ok. That seems like quite a fall! Good luck at the Doc.!

SkiNurse - snow snake must be a fairly archaic expression - however, I distinctly remember recently reading a list of skiing terminology/vernacular somewhere (where??? print? online?) that included the term. Love the term trail trolls, though!

NVG, thanks, will let you know...I was doing a nice line on a nice black too - no ice, have zero idea what happened (like you) - but I was clipping along fairly fast. BAM. I literally saw stars. It got my helmet and left forearm too, but arm's fine and helmet obviously spared me a headache. For the most part, this was a one-point landing....:( I can totally handle a bruise and just about any level of pain (we older divas are tough broads  ). But if there's any kind of crack in the femur cortex, it's a horse of an altogether different color.....

Loved your bouquet! Was an early a.m. bright spot to view it, thanks!

Meanwhile, DH headed out solo in the storm early this a.m. to catch some fresh tracks and hopefully will be able to make it home, as the intensity of snow has picked up quite a bit here now.

Ah well, come what may. What's discouraging is that I really worked out hard for several months prior to season's start and was totally feeling great, good endurance, etc. But if I'm told no more skiing this season, I will just have to enjoy it vicariously through y'all here...

I did one of those head over heel things recently. No real idea why. One of my skis came off, and I had a hard time getting it back on because I was on a steep part of the trail. On my next run, I evidently decided one ski off wasn't good enough, so did it again and, hooray, got two skis to release.:ski2: In the past, I've also been on easy, flat areas and simply gone plunk. Hard to get back up when you fall on the flats. Very embarrassing.

It's funny to see the "snow snake" term here as I had a kids take a fall yesterday out of nowhere. I asked him if a snow snake got him and he was completely confused!

And, yes, I've taken a few of those random falls. NVG, where were you skiing?

MSL - Thanks for asking, but yeah, I'm OK now. This happened 2 seasons ago. My hips just fine, I don't know if my ego will recover tho!

"trail trolls" and "snow snakes." I learn something new here everyday

MSL, hope all goes well at the dr's and there's no DL for you this winter.

I've had my share of going "plunk" especially when re-learning how to ski a few years ago.

One day last spring I was messing around on my tele gear, and I was feeling pretty confident. The I had been skiing faster and faster throughout the day, and I was moving along pretty good down an open run. All of a sudden, I caught the downhill edge of my downhill ski (don't ask) and I slammed down hard on my right shoulder. It rang my bell pretty good (thank god for helmets), and I skied down to the lift. My shoulder felt tight and tender and it got worse as I rode up the lift. I ended up calling it a day and heading to the clinic since the pain was pretty bad. Two hours later, I was told I had a partially separated shoulder. Yuck.

It happens so fast. I can't believe I never used to wear a helmet!

Thanks to all for your good wishes. I think I'll come out of this okay. Better safe than sorry, have to check it out. This is sort of turning into a "best crash" kind of thread - which wouldn't be so bad, but we'd surely have to temper it with a "best moment" counterpoint so as not to have it be so down/negative! We've all had a great moment, would be fun to share, but with holidays descending, doubt that there's time for a new thread. Maybe I'll start one after the holidays??? Happy trails to all, we've got a bunch more up here in Maine, but the winds are a-howling, so lots of wind holds on lifts --- anyone hear about the Loon gondola DERAILMENT at 9 a.m. Sunday?? About 75 people stuck on it for 90 minutes or so!

Oh, crumb, the snow is just too good - I'm gonna brave it and go out tomorrow, no falling allowed. Will just mellow-cruise the blues, at least will get some fresh air. Also HAFTA get out and pump some iron tonight. Thursday will come soon enough ...

I've had several "plunk" moments. Always seems to be in a flat or transition area, where I'm not concentrating...hmmm...!

One of my tricks is to ski right up next to where my husband is stopped. Full-on hockey stop (trying to spray him with snow), and then once I come to a stop, I over-balance and...PLUNK! Oof.

Had a good one this last weekend. Skiing a transition trail from one lift to another. Picked up a good head of steam on the groomed area, and then straightlined into some powder. The light was flat and I didn't see how deep the snow was. All of a sudden, my skis just STOPPED! I pitched forward and released out of both skis simultaneously, and got a face full of snow. I got up, brushed myself off, and when I looked down my skis were perfectly parallel, with only the binding visible.

Skiing in Vail the day after the wedding! Maybe I just had "Rocky Knees".....you know "Stay away from women Rocky....they weaken the knees!" :ROTF:

Okay, you crack me up. One of these days we HAVE to meet up, either on the slopes or down here.

Last winter, I cut too close around a marked hazard. One moment I was carving a turn, next I had dropped a couple feet (Plunk!) and was standing in a hole with snow up to my knees. Luckily I didn't have all that much momentum, or I might have pitched forward on my face. There were a bunch of other patrollers right there laughing at me. I tried to shrug it off and appear unconcerned and unembarrased, until I kicked my foot forward to resume my forward progress, and found my foot no longer attached to my ski. I was living that one down all day.

Sorry to revive this thread, but I just thought I'd mention to those divas who posted here that MaineSkiLady is NOT broken and WILL survive. Interesting to get a full pelvic/femur x-ray, I'd never had one before (that I recall). What I do have, besides the obvious bruise, is bursitis, as a result of the fall. That I can handle (I think). She (nice lady orthopedist, and a Native American, bravo) doesn't like the way my hips "go together" and said I might need hip replacement in about 20 years. Right.....how about NOT.

In short, this was a "take 2 aspirin and call me in the morning" kind of result. Yay! Time to get out there now and POUND IT (no falling allowed....). MSL out. Thanks for caring!
