Hand/Wrist Injuries

Skier’s thumb sucks. My most common ski injury - even though I use my pole straps correctly.

I gad skiers thumb once and broke the large knuckle another time. The break healed in half of the time required for skier’s thumb. I’m lucky that I didn’t need a surgery either time. That ligament injury left my hand useless. Even with the knuckle broken, the thumb was functional in the brace. I wasn’t using poke straps in either case. I had Leki trigger pokes. They were older and didn’t release either time. I threw them away.

Amen, these small injuries are a big headache. TFCC can feel endless. Skiers thumb can also be called “shouldn’t have moved the furniture alone” thumb. I’m 4 months post op and about 70% back. One of the reasons it’s still painful is that I injured it in last Christmas and - because I didn’t want to miss ski season for a thumb - had the surgery in June. (What would you do?) TBH I wouldn’t recommend this decision to anyone in the same boat. It’s painful, I missed biking all summer, and I will definitely have an arthritic thumb joint. But I have great memories of blue sky skiing in Chamonix!

@Sallydog I was speaking with a friend last night who needs surgery on both hands over thumb issues. She is hoping to get the first one done in November. She is worried about losing the whole season.

Oh darn for her, that stinks. It's a tough call on delaying because we think "for a thumb?" But I suppose any evolutionary biologist would point out that, yes, a thumb is a pretty useful thing to have. Maybe her doctor can advise her on what might be the consequences of delaying surgery, as I'm sure age, injury, how hard she is on her hands, etc. play into it. You can let her know, FWIW, mine was RCL, not UCL, and I had the internal splint which accelerated my recovery, according to my PT.

Hand and wrist injuries seem so common among skiers and snowboarders, and it’s easy to underestimate how much they can impact daily life. Reading everyone’s experiences here really drives home how important early diagnosis and proper treatment are. It’s also interesting how different equipment, like pole straps or Leki triggers, can affect the type or severity of injury.
