Halloween 2008

It's getting to be that time of year, which I'm sure all divas can appreciate because it means we're getting close to ski season (:snow:). So who dresses up, who gives out candy, who's taking the kids trick or treating, etc? Who's picked out their costume already (or your kids or DHs) and what're you (/them) going as?

Pequenita, you mentioned you're going to be a political figure in the Dawning Chorus. Who's it gonna be?

I'm going to be Sonic The Hedgehog

My best friend/fellow Halloween lover is going to be Mario

My 5 year old niece is going to be Batgirl

. This is the first year that she's cared about her gender matching the superhero. In years past she was Spiderman and Optimus Prime (as well as a chili pepper as a baby and Cinderella when she was 3, making it a food item, boy, girl, boy, girl costume pattern).

My 8 year old brother is going to be The Joker, but we haven't decided which incarnation we'll be going with, so no sample pic yet.

I toyed with the idea of dressing the kids up to match Sonic and Mario, the girl could be a ring and the boy could be a coin, but decided against it because while it would look cool while trick or treating, it'd be pretty lame for them at the school parties and such.

I'm going to my first US Halloween party and will need to dress up. I have no idea what to do. In the UK, if we dress up for Halloween it has to be as Witches, Ghouls, Vampires, Zombies etc. Something spooky. I'll probably end up as something in that genre as it's really the only costume I'd feel comfortable in.

The past two years we've gone to a Halloween "Trek or Treat" hike with our moms/babies hiking group, but I let my membership go last month. We live in a condo complex and never get any trick or treaters, so I usually go down to my best friend's house in the burbs to help her hand out candy. I imagine we'll probably do the same this year. We take the kids on a quick loop of her close neighbors to show off their costumes and get just a little candy (more for us than the kids!).

I haven't put any thought into costumes yet. I may try to run by Old Navy tomorrow and see what they have. I got their monkey costume for DS last year and it was adorable (and cheap). I probably won't dress up this year unless something changes and I get invited to a dress-up party.

A friend of mine is hosting a themed 'superheroes and villains' party.

I am going as Tank Girl and The Boy is going as Doctor Evil. (providing we can put together costumes in time!)

I LOVE Halloween. Ever since I was a kid,I wanted to have that cool house that all the kids love trick or treating at. But, alas, our apartment is not. Last year we took Mags trick or treating for the first time in my parents' neighborhood (it's a planned unit development, only one entrance into the neighborhood and it's monitored by police - you cannot get in unless you live there or someone who lives there put you on the list, so it's VERY safe). I was thinking of having my sister take her trick or treating this year so I could hand out candy, but I'm not sure yet. I LOVE dressing up. But no money so it will likely be whatever I have on hand... skier? LOL. I have a Renaissance Faire wench type costume, but it's big on me now. So I have not a clue at this point what I'm doing... but I love celebrating Halloween. One of these years, I'm going to get my butt up to Salem, MA in October, too, so I can see all the cool stuff they do up there for the holiday.

Does it make me a party pooper if I admit that I don't like Halloween? It's just one of the holidays that never lives up to the hype for me. New Year's Eve is also on that list.

That said, I'll probably wear my standby cow costume unless I can think of a better idea. One year I put a diaper on it and said I was veal. I was pretty proud of myself for thinking of that one. ;)

Well, I went by Old Navy today and was very disappointed in their toddler costume selection. They only had 3 for boys, one of which was the monkey that we had for last year. :( Guess I'll have to keep looking...

I've decided I want to dress as Mrs Lovett from Sweeney Todd for my Halloween costume. It satisfies my need for a "spooky"costume, but is also contemporary and I can eat pie and speak in a dreadful cockney accent all night whilst having already really badly mussed up hair.
I have my eye on a guy who will be there so I need a "killer" costume!!!

I'm going super geeky this year - Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica!!

Nice! I was thinking about being Boomer or Athena no one I coordinate costumes with was into it. I told my friend another year, we'll make the theme general Sci Fi. I'll be Boomer/Athena and she has to be Worf from Star Trek unless she comes up with something better, hehe.

My 3 year old saw a Lucy (Narnia) costume @ Target and keeps telling us she wants to be "the girl from Narnia"... so I'm not sure where we're going with that. I kind of wanted to do a theme with our costumes (and try to talk DH into joining us) but I was thinking pirates. I'm not sure how to get us all into the Narnia theme... not easily for someone who doesn't sew, anyway.

The best costume I have ever seen was a guy who dressed up as the Empire State Building by basically strapping some big grey rectangles to himself, and then he put his toddler in a monkey costume and carried him around. Please do this. This costume is literally the only thing I have seen so far that has made me want a kid.

Probably wouldn't work this year, though, DS is too much into wanting to walk by himself (and too heavy for me to carry for long!). That would have been great last year, though. I dressed up as a doctor b/c it was the only thing I didn't have to buy anything for...already had scrubs and a stethoscope.

The more I think about it, the more I think that the bat costume at Old Navy was actually kind of cute. My only problem is that I have a serious bat phobia, which is why I immediately ruled it out. :becky:

I am going to be 1984 Miss Wasilla 1st Runner Up. No matter what your politics are, this costume is going to be a killer: I get to wear my high school prom dress from the early 90s. Although, a couple guys I know have been asking whether I will be dressed as a contestant in the the swimsuit portion....

You're lucky becasue in Vancouver if a girl dresses in something spooky she's a party pooper- why? Because all girls here dress as a sluty fill-in-the-blank. Slutty nurse, slutty school girl, slutty cowgirl, slutty cop, slutty racecare driver... you get the idea? And, I've asked if there is any great costume parties that won't have slutty girls left right and center and no one can even suggest one party... GREAT... eh? Not.

No way. I agree with you 100%; especially about new years... the same club I always go to will jack up cover 5 times the regular price and offer me 1 measly glass of cheap champange at midnight... WTH? I'd rather get my shut-eye.

Costumes have been decided this year.

My 3 year old little girl chose to be a fireman. :D

My 1 year old little boy chose this adorable lion costume. He was rubbing the tail on his face in the store lovingly like it was his blankey.

I picked up a pair of monarch butterfly wings from TJ Maxx for $6.99. Put those on with an all black outfit and hey - I'm a butterfly! :D My regular costume is now too big...

DH ... is a party pooper. He doesn't like dressing up. Though he said he'd be Dr. Evil if I let him shave his head.

Yup and I'd rather get up early and go skiing. At least in Quebec there aren't too many skiers around on New Year's Day.
