I've stayed in a few places in Queenstown. Without knowing budget and inclinations, I'd say look up the bus route if that's what you're doing and make sure you're staying on the same road as it's hillier than it looks on maps. Last time I was there they'd let us store our gear up the mountain providing we rented it from the operator - and that was a whole heap less hassle than having to lug it around though it meant we were committed to that hill the next day.
Personally we try and stay somewhere on Stanley Street for convenience of getting food etc, and the bus in both directions stops in several places there. We've also stayed on Beach Street, which is nice and flat, I don't remember where the buses were though. One time we stayed further east on Frankton Road and that was just a bit inconvenient for everything.
