Grandma's New Bike

After hearing our family talk about riding together, my Grandma (who turned 90 in April) has decided she wants to get back to riding. She used to ride daily until she had a huge crash on the big hill right by their house about 10 years ago. So, we decided that a 3-wheeler was in order. I found one for sale, chained to a telephone pole on our way home from downstate one day. $75 and much grunting later, it was loaded into the van, on it's way to our house. Close scrutiny of our purchase showed it to be mechanically sound but incredibly rusty from sitting outside. It also had a shredded brake cable housing and 3 dry-rotted tires.

Here's what it originally looked like:

So, I got to work on it (turns out the paint was originally a pretty opalescent off-white, but now it's just a flat, boring cream):

Due to weather concerns, it took us a while to get it painted. The clear coat especially is really sensitive to humidity and temperature, but I finally had a nice day yesterday and got it finished up.

Putting on the new rubber with snazzy white walls:

The front and back halves reassembled:

And the finished bike (complete with whirly bell that lights up)!!

I'm hoping to get it down to her this weekend......I can't wait til she sees it.

It's beautiful, and you gave her tassles! Lucky Lady, you put a lot of love into the bike for her.

I hope she has fun on it.

That's awesome!! I'm happy to hear she's still wants to ride at 90!

My grandmother never learned to ride a bike. When my grandfather was alive, they used to ride the tandem bike with her in the back. After he passed away, she would never try <can't blame her> and she was even having trouble walking in her last few years.

Their driveway was concrete but quite long, so my aunts and uncles bought her a schwinn tricycle to ride to get the mail <complete with basket>...

She's passed on now, but remembering her with that tricycle is awesome. She loved it.

What a great thing you did for your grandma!

Partial update:

The bike has been delivered! She even called me the next day to tell me she had ridden around the parking lot twice that day.

I have lots of pics of delivery day, but have been having problems with Putfile, so will be uploading to Facebook and posting here soon.
