Hi Divas -

Our family is considering a trip to Gore Mountain in February 2009.

What is the mountain like? Best ideas for places to stay?

Thanks !

I visited Gore last year. Our friends have a home about 1 hour away, so I don't know places to stay. The mountain seemed good, plenty of trails. But last year was a good snow year.

I haven't been there in quite a few years, but, it is a New York State owned ski area (like Whiteface and Belleayre), not fancy, but good trails. You'd just have to check the website, call the area, or call the Chamber of Commerce in that town.

It's better than Blue. ;-)

Only been to Gore once. Doesn't stand out to be anything special. Not bad though.

From where you are, Whiteface is probably a better bet. And the town of Lake Placid is 10 times better than whatever you can find by Gore. But I'm biased, LP is my number 1 favorate ski town in the northeast.

Unless, of course, you've been skiing WF year after year and want a change of scenary. Then Gore will do.

Gore is wonderful! However it is all about the skiing. (and that's not a bad thing). I would agree that Lake Placid/Whiteface might be the better option if your looking for a great ski town to spend apres ski time in.
I'm biased to Gore just because it's my home mountain. I ski midweek only and crowds are nearly nonexistant. Plenty of trails and a new expansion opening this year. In my "inexperienced" opinion there is a good variety of terrain which should keep everyone happy if vacationing as a family w/ different skill sets.

As mentioned previously check www.goremountain.com for area lodging. I wish I could make some recommendations, but living so close I've never had the need. FWIW, you may consider staying this the Lake George area which is a convenient 30 min. drive from Gore. (again, biased here as I live in LG, lol)

Let me know if I can assist you with any more info.

You Divas are awesome, thanks for the scoop.

We're not really apres ski people, we like to head to a cottage/condo, eat, play some family games and sleep - it's all about the snow for us, so I think this will be great.

We're in Oakville, Ontario, so this part of NY is way closer than LP is - we only realized how easy things could be getting accross NY on whatever the freeway is I-90 ??? when we headed down to Hamlin Beach State park this summer, so now we're looking at winter options.

Thanks all !

I took a trip to Gore a few years ago and stayed at the Inn on Gore (innongore.com). It was right next to the mountain which was super convenient. I seem to remember getting a good deal with lodging, lift tickets, and a nice dinner at their onsite restaurant included. The rooms weren't anything fancy, but we were happy with it.
