Giro Helmets

Giro has updated their site with their 08/09 snow helmet collection. This year's Fuse (my fav) comes in a great acid green color. Anyone wearing that helmet would be easy to spot on the hill!

Hmmm, that's a color I would have to see in person. I might love it, I might hate it.

Are there recommendations for how often to replace a helmet, under normal use? Mine's going on at least 5 years and it's had its share of bonks---mostly tree branches in my treks through Honeycomb) and a few skis carried by folks with poor time-space orientation, but otherwise, nothing major.

I'm thinking it's good for an indefinite amount of time unless it has cracks?

If it were me, I would replace after 5 seasons for a variety of reasons, but perhaps Giro has some info. on their site about that???

Hmm, that's a good question. I know they say to replace if there's any visible damage, but I don't know if the plastic starts to break down over time or not. It could be like kids' car seats...they have an expiration date because the plastic degrades and becomes brittle (I've seen the video on old car seats, it's frightening). My ski helmet is only a year old, but my bike helmet's almost 10 years old.

my old giro nine is 7 years old and i just replaced it this year with a new G9. Gonna miss all the scratches..."oh, that's from when I bashed the tree...that's from hitting my head on a rail, that's from banging the lift bar on my head", etc., but I'm psyched! I love Giro helmets. Simple, light, bomber, etc. Perfect for the backcountry.

I tried a Bern Cougar last year and really, really liked the style, but just couldn't handle the lack of a goggle clip. Goggles would slide around a fly off anytime I had 'em above my eyes. Hoping they remedy that. Anyway.

Justt my giro helmet. I couldn't believe how lightweight, it is my first helmet, and I guess I was expecting something heavy. It is rickoshet (sp?) It has the inner adjuster or something:wink: - can you tell now that this is my first helmet

I'm not sure about when to replace a helmet that's had normal wear, but I've always heard that if it's hit anything (tree, rail, chairlift bar), it should be replaced. The whole point is for the plastic to absorb the force and once it does so, it isn't able to do it again.

Yes, the plastic does degrade with time and exposure to sunlight and cold. Also, the padding and the inner foam degrades with exposure to sweat.

I know with bike helmets, replacement is suggested every 2-5 years, depending on manufacturer. I don't know for ski helmets, but that should be on their website.

Yikes! Guess I need to look for a new bike helmet, since I'm at double the recommended life...although the 5 years it didn't get worn at all should count for something, right? Kidding...
