Getting to Waterville Valley NH / lodging needed March 11-15

uh oh... it looks like my message did not post....

or was a pixie in here with an erasure?

I am trying to get 1) our 17 year old son and 2) my husband and me to Waterville for the Junior Olympics March 11-16. Our son has qualified for dual moguls. But the $$$ is thin these days. The condos will give a huge discount for JO families BUT we still may not be able to do it. There is even a question of whether we can send our son. So I am looking for solutions. Hence a post over in the "rentals" forum about a swap. Right now we are property rich and cash poor.

Anyone with info or a network in the area? I know nothing about Waterville and surrounding towns.

no, it posted. It would just seem that there is no one that can help you out. I am in NH and as far as I know, there aren't too many Divas near Waterville.

Good luck, I hope you find something!

I might be able to help!!!

Hi Squaw..... Actually, WV is my home mountain. I grew up there, and was a BBTS racer. My grandmother actually used to run BBTS and is still on their board- thus we have lots of connections. Let me shoot her an email and see if she has the "in" on any special lodging..... how many are going????

In the meantime, what I can tell you is that the lodging in the immediate downtown area (Black Bear Lodge, Golden Eagle Lodge ) tends to be expensive but they do have a lot of ammenities (indoor/outdoor pool, sauna, etc). You could try the Snowy Owl Inn, which is right next to Town Square (the downtown shopping area) and has easy access to the Shuttle Bus, which will take you back & forth to the mtn for free. parking at WV isn't the greatest, esp. during a big event like the JO's.

You may also want to look online and see who's renting their timeshare for the weekend. WV is primarily filled with condos and duplexes (but the town pop. I believe is only 245), and with this economy I'd be willing to bet you could rent someone's condo relatively cheap. They come in all shapes, sizes and level of luxury.

Hope that helps a bit. I'm emailing my nana now, will get back to you ASAP! Good luck! (We're heading up there for a BBTS reunion the weekend after you plan to be there)

Guess I just need to read more closely!!! GOt it, 3 people.

I actually know the freestyle coach at WV personally (went to school with his son, who is now on the Olympic team). They live right outside of Waterville, in a small town town called Campton (also a place to check out lodging, not considered mountainside but not too far away). Anyway I'll check it out....

Nana's recommendations:

Days Inn in Campton- A little further out, really only chain hotel in the area, likely to be much cheaper than mountainside lodging.

Mountain Fare Bed & Breakfast- this is the B & B owned by the Prestons, who run the Freestyle program at Waterville (son is the Olympic mogul skier). No promises, but they might be able to give you a deal if you explain your situation. They're super nice people and have quite the legacy of freestyle skiers. You can tell them that the McIntyres recommended you to them.

You can also do a search of B & B's in the area. You want to look at Campton, West Campton, Waterville or Thornton. They are all a reasonable driving distance to the mountain (within about 35 mins). Plymouth has more accomodations, but is a good hour+ drive to the mountain in the morning.

I hope that helps!!! If you need more info, you can PM me or post here, I'll check back.

ZealouslyB,
You and your Nana are sweet. Thank you so much for the info. OK. Another mom got was apparently is the last of the one of the condo complexes you reference -- a small two bedroom. We're going to share. and maybe farm our 17 year old sons out to the rooms the coaches have reserved close by. I may be with my sleeping bag on the floor, but by sharing this way, it makes it possible. We are also able to share a car, so that cuts costs. Hate to be so $$$ oriented, but with a mortgage brokerage as the family business, it has been hard. And competitive skiing fees and travel are WHEW demanding.

I felt despairing when I posted, but with your info and encouragement and the other mom's offer, I think we can now make it work.

Super glad to hear it!!!! It's really a wonderful little town. You will have no qualms about letting the teens run loose around town while you relax, have dinner, whatever. It's small, there's the shuttle bus to get you where you want to go, can't really get lost, sledding/cross country skiing/ice skating/etc. available too. Despite the financial woes, you should find it a relaxing time. Have fun, and good luck to your son!

Many thanks for the encouraging words. I am excited to go, both to see the caliber at JO's and to ski in the East. Yes, I know some of you will laugh when I say that, but it is fun to ski different places with completely different terrain and approaches. I understand the little town is quite enjoyable.
