Getting through the off season

What do you like to do in the off-season to stay in shape? I go the gym five times a week, where I do half an hour of cardio and half an hour of weights. I also like to hike, swim, and I've been kayaking a time or two, which I'd like to do more.

in the summers, I love to get the chance to go to the beach and get some swimming in! too bad I can't find a place with warm, sandy beaches and good ski mountains close to each other.

I bike. Had a hybrid for years and years, but graduated to a road bike a few months ago. What a difference!

I typically would be running 30-40 miles a week. Not this year due to foot surgery. I am at the gym regularly and as of now doing some cross-training to try and keep in shape. There is nothing like a good long run though and I miss that!!

Yes I am doing an hour of cardio on this death machine called the guantlet. It is like climbing a downwards escalator.I can do the eliptical and the bikebut I just cannot duplicate running outside. Plus the boredom is escrutiating!

I had a case of Hallux rigidus, basically big stiff toe. They do a procedure where they break the bone above the joint then pin it back together. It enables the big toe to have a better range of motion so I can get back to running without pain. It's been about 4 months from my surgery and I have a case of delayed union(the bones are very slow to heal)That's it in a nutshell!

Ow. Sounds like you've got a good attitude, though. Here's hoping it heals in time for ski season!

Sorry for the poor resolution, the pic was taken with a cameraphone on a rainy day.

I'm generally quite lazy and start the season off in not the best shape. My love of skiing has carried me most years, but last year, with the increasing age and the poor healt habits I had, I often found endurance difficult. This year I have been swimming and walking. I've been making healthier choices eating and practicing some breathing and relaxation techniques. Maybe when I get to the top of a REALLY steep run or Moguls I won't freak out. I've dropped 35lbs (so far) with my change in habits and hope to lose more...though I am not on any set diet plan.

It has been difficult to keep up the walking since I had toe surgery a few weeks ago. School also started, so it was back to work for me. I have not been home before 5 since school started.

In the warmer months I run a bit still (joints aging), add road biking in april. I spend large amounts of time gardening, but am unsure if that does much for conditioning. I am certainly exhaused after a few hours!
During winter, I mostly do elliptical with occasional spin classes and run outside about once a week. My goal all year round is to do yoga twice a week, but achieving that goal doesn't always happen. The only reason I can still jog a bit is because of the yoga. Cured the ITB.

For fun I love to water ski and canoe. I also do alot of gardening--which I never thought of as exercise--but I sure do get sore after doing it awhile.

To stay in shape I swim--which I found to be WONDERFUL and try to do at least every other day. No excuses cuz we have a pool in the backyard and the good old Florida sunshine and the solar panels on top of the house make it swimmable year round (or pretty close). So much better on the body then running.

But I need to get into a weight program and would love to try yoga.

well after 6 long months of no running I finally got outside and did a 3 miler!! My foot was fine until I got to a steep downhill where I had to walk(toe was pushing against my shoe) It was great to be outside again! Maybe I will fit back into my ski pants afterall!!

Ditto Terry....congrats and good luck on the rest of your rehab.

I had a rough year as far as staying in shape. I went from a job where I was on my feet all day (3-5miles just at work) to a desk job. I gained 20 lbs! Plus, my Yoga class was cancelled, so I've had to motivate myself to stay doing yoga at least 2x/week.

I did, however, find a group to mountain bike with and we rode at least 1-2x a week together, plus I rode a lot by myself. Between my 2 bikes, I've logged over 800 miles for the summer, almost all off-road.

Yesterday I competed in my first mountain bike race - it was a doozey!! The Iceman Cometh is a nationally sanctioned NORBA race. It's 27 miles of seriously hilly off road riding with 2 really twisty technical sections. Plus, it was 34 degrees and snowing! I was thrilled to finish in under 4 hours (3:42), I was not DFL, and I beat my husband by 7minutes! :D I actually placed 5th in my group.

Here's pics of myself (Kris), Hubby (Chet), Kids (Justin & Cole), and friends riding this summer:

Those a great pics Kris!! The worst part about my summer was hearing other people talk about running.I would love to take up mtbing but I need to purchase a better bike and I need boots and ski pants and sneakers and gloves and running tights and the list goes on.Winning the lottery would be good about now!

Sounds like a fun race even thought the weather was not cooperating!!

Off Season

I am about to take up inline skating so I'm looking forward to that but have to admit there isn't a sport that I enjoy as much as skiing, so it's a noticeable transition time. I have a tendency to focus on certain sports and spent a fair amount of time road riding over the past several years. I love being outside and especially riding through scenic, woodsy spots. Went on a bike tour through the California wine country a few years ago and that was very scenic. But nothing is quite like skiing.....

Off-season? What off-season?

Sorry. I guess I'm a bike chick first and ski diva a distant second. So, summer is my "in-season" while winter is my "off-season".

Though I'm not nearly as obsessed with biking as with skiing. I can pretty much ride 8-10 months out of a year depending on my luck. So there's much less urgency with biking than with skiing. Nor do I need to drive for hours to get to a resort to bike. So I don't have to bike for a whole day to justify all the driving and travel expense. In short, I ride way more often than I ski, but less intensely.
