Friday Skiing

well, come hell or high water, I am going skiing with my son on Friday. I have no school so I'm going to let him miss a day. He's a senior and has about 47 days left, he'll be fine.

The real question is where to go for a day trip. I've ruled out Sunday River for just a day. We'd do it if MSL was available o we were going for 2 days, but that's not the case. We'll catch up one of these days MSL!

So, here's the places in the running:

Wildcat
, probably my first choice, but almost as far as SR. I've been there and loved it and would love to take Matt there before he heads off to college next fall.

Attitash, neither of us have ever been there and it looks nice.

Loon
, same as Attitash, would love to go there.

Sunapee
, tried and true, Sunapee is where I fell in love with NH. Oh, and he skis free there. Sucks that $$ is a factor, but that's the way it is. Weather/conditions can be dicey that far south in March

I'm looking forward to seeing what the collective SkiDiva Brain thinks!

Just my two cents as I've skied 2 of these areas :

Loon will be insanely crowded. They do a good job taking care of the mountains but if you're hoping to avoid long lines probably not the place to go on a Friday. I skiied here on a Thursday last month. Had fun playing on some blacks!

Attitash - may be crowded, but it's a bit further out of the way for the Boston folk. I haven't skiied there since 2 seasons ago, but I'm told the new ownership/management has been taking very good care of the conditions. Also a bit further north so likely to be safer w regard to a potential rain/snow line.

Sunapee - haven't skiied here, but it's the closest to Boston so I would not be surprised to see crowding issues here.

Wildcat - it's on my short list to ski at some point. One thing to be aware of is that they generally only run 2 of the major lifts on weekdays (the summit and the one on the "right" side - don't remember their names). This definitely ought to be the least crowded and the most safe with regards to potential rain/snow line. As for distance, it's not as far as SR. DH and I used to regularly travel from our home (south of boston) to Jackson. Just head through Boston to 95, to 16 north. Also a nice drive with plenty of little towns along the way. Watch out through Tamworth as they like to ticket the non-locals. I'd suggest same route to Attitash (which btw is really only 20 minutes shorter drive)

Check on Alpine Zone for trip reports re the real deal on recent Wildcat conditions. They don't make or groom as much snow as some places, and the conditions may not be as good as other places given the kind of weather we endured up here in the mountains last weekend (HEAVY RAIN).

Best bet for conditions based on what I've heard of this season's grooming: Attitash. Nothing but raves about how they've taken care of the mountain(s). I was there for half a day once, did Bear, enjoyed it, didn't see much but liked what I did.

These are the only 2 on your list that I've visited.
Let us know what you decide!
msl (wish I could join you....sigh....no skiing yet for me)
