Freeride question

I never tried it before .... skiing in the powder and not on the slopes.
Are there some basics I should know about the technique used to ride in powder snow?

Missy, I just skied powder all day today and it was so neat---when your skis are in soft powder they float and it is a really wonderful feeling.

When people are new to powder, I tell them to ski the edges of the runs--just ski straight and feel how the powder is---it will slow you down a little, so make sure you have enough speed to just cruise through it.

I ski all conditions with exactly the same skiing style---short turns right down the fall line----but, if the powder is heavy, I do put more emphasis on coming forward as I begin the turn.

Find some powder on a slope that is not too steep and just play in it---we have a little run with trees that are not close together and that is my favorite place to bring people who want to experience powder---play is the format!!!

Last year, I had an 89 year old woman who signed up for a powder lesson--she is my new role model and heroine.

missy, I asked the same question a few weeks ago and generated a lot of discussion
I wish I remember all those suggestions and pointers!

After 3 days of skiing almost exclusively firm snow, I had almost forgotten how to ski powder! Today's out-of-bound tour (ourside of resort boundry) was all soft powder of various consistancy. The snow was just dense enough to let me get away with my un-even weigh wide groomer stance but it was work and wasn't pretty. Only after 2 or 3 pitches that my brain finally woke up and say "hey, it's soft powder, feet together and equal weight!". Then, it worked a whole lot smoother!

When we came back into the resort boundry, the snow was firm and hardpack, I nearly lost it with my two footed powder stance! :(
