This is really creepy. The owner was just arrested on child porn charges.

From The Rutland Herald:

Businessman faces child porn charge

June 26, 2007
Staff Reports

The owner of the Basin Ski Shop in Killington is facing a federal charge of possessing child pornography.

Federal prosecutors said in a statement that Richard Torrey, 56, of Killington, was charged Monday with the federal offense.

He was released on a variety of conditions, including home confinement and electronic monitoring.

According to the criminal complaint filed in federal court in Vermont in January, Torrey paid $99.95 to obtain access to a child pornography Web site titled, "Home Collection."

Special agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement last week executed a search warrant at Torrey's business on Killington Road and seized a variety of digital media that contained photos and videos of underage females engaged in sexually explicit conduct, federal prosecutors said in the statement.

Torrey took ownership of the ski shop in 1991.

The case was investigated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

We talk to that guy all the time! He seemed perfectly "normal" to us--but I guess this calls into question not only what is normal but also what we are capable of perceiving in the people around us. We can think all we want about what a slime ball he must be, but too often we forget about what physical & emotional harm is visited upon the innocent and how these children will still be paying the price when they're old.

Well said, QQ. I went in there myself to shop for boots, and though I didn't get them there, it's a great shop with a good reputation. Ski magazine named it New England Ski Shop of the Year for 2007. Just goes to show, you never know what's going on in people's lives.

Update: Just learned he got three years in prison, plus five years probation.

Yikes. This reminds me of my high school band director, who it turns out was spanking his teenage male employees in the basement of his music shop. True story!

yes, creepy story, that's what everyone at Killington was talking about in the spring.

I was in the shop talking with him just two weeks ago, and he was indicating how the recent "difficulties" have made his marriage stronger. Well, good for him and his wife--"for better or worse" has certainly come home to roost! Problem is, his marriage enhancement and sentence don't make the lives of the victimized children any better. They, as opposed to his few years, have a life sentence.

I don't think anyone could have set it better.

It's really to bad to hear all of this going on. Just the other day I found out a local principal was in the same situation. The kids are so innocent...why them? There are prostitutes a dime a dozen who are willing to "fufill their needs", for lack of better word choice. Go there and leave these kids alone! Geez:mad2:

wow. Well I always thought he seemed a little weird, but this was a shocker to hear about last year. I'm not defending what he did one bit, but I wanted to point out that this may have been teenage girls, 16, 17, voluntarily engaging in porn, not 5 year olds being raped at knife point. If she's 17 1/2 it's still child porn. 6 months later shes 18, and it's all well and good. Is it still wrong if they were older teens? Of course, and he deserves whatever he got. I do feel bad for his family though - it's so humiliating for them. It was obviously really bad judgment on his part to go to a site like that. Just saying, there are not necessarily traumatized children whose lives were ruined by this (we can only hope).

Sad for all involved but still a very bad decision on the owner's part. When the news of it first broke, I knew I could not ever support that business again if he were to be proven guilty.

There are innocent principals in the shop, as well as all the employees, that are dependent on the business staying open. I'll continue to be a customer of Basin, especially since one of their bootfitters, Carol, is fabulous.

That's why I decided not to boycott them last year - I did season tunes there for years. His daughter has been basically running the shop, and why should she suffer? The family and the long time employees have been through enough with this.

The truth about Torrey

Let me just clear a few things up here....

"According to the criminal complaint, in January 2007, Torrey paid $99.95 to obtain access to a child pornography website entitled “Home Collection.” Special Agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement executed a search warrant at Torrey’s business and seized a variety of digital media which contained photos and videos of prepubescent females engaged in sexually explicit conduct."

"Agents found approximately 1,300 photographs and 30 videos featuring underage girls, some under the age of seven, engaged in sexual activity with adult men on computer disks hidden in a closet in a section of the ski shop used by Torrey as a living space during the ski season. Some featured sadomasochistic poses."

These were excerpted from the website www.firsttracksonline.com

The fact is this guy will end up doing a lighter sentence than three years and at that time he will go back to his successful business and life will be back to normal for him. Yes, you can say "he did his time", but what about the children (and I think we can all agree that girls under the age of 7 are children) that are being exploited to feed this pervert's habit? It wasn't "she told me she was 21". This was a site dedicated to "child" pornography. Specifically, girls under the age of 7 engaged in sexual activity with adult men and sadomasochistic poses.

Worrying about the employees and family there is noble, but the bottom line is the business is owned by a man who is using your money to line the pockets of deviants who sexually abuse and torture children, and as a parent I could never support that. One thing most law enforcement will agree with is that this is something with an extremely high recidivism rate, and the behaviour often escalates as the viewer becomes desensitised to the images. Think about that in a few years when you bring your little girls there...and while they're happily trying on new ski clothes in the change rooms you can probably be sure that Torrey is thinking sick thoughts about them. Or worse.

wow, pretty amazing. I still feel bad for his wide & daughter - can you imagine finding this out about your father or husband? Well I guess everyone has to make their own decisions about the business - for me it's a moot point anyway. I am curious to what extent the business has suffered... they seemed just as busy as ever last season, and his charges were common knowledge around Killington.

I disagree that life will ever return to normal for him - he'll never be a presence in that store again - not with all this info. public... and I'm not so sure his marriage will survive this - how could it? But yes, he'll still benefit from it financially.

I am sure his family was absolutely devastated. I can't even imagine, and I feel for them, but he brought this on them.

I know his life will never be exactly the same with the local population, but it's the tourists who fund the majority of his business and they will have no idea what they are walking into. Even most of the locals don't know the true nature of what he really did, which is what prompted me to post in the first place. It's easy to think "maybe they were 17 year olds" because it's really hard to wrap your mind around the fact that while you were downstairs shopping he may have been upstairs becoming sexually aroused by 7 year olds being raped and tortured by adult men.

With the overcrowding and early realease in prisons you can bet that he'll be out in 2 years, and looking to somehow rebuild his "collection". He was obviously doing this for a long time to amass thousands of photos, and this is the first time he got caught in a sting. Maybe he'll never subscribe to a random site again, but he obviously has other sources that he was using and not getting caught. Even if he never buys another photo, it is unlikely that the thoughts will ever go away.

As far as him never showing his face in the store again...someone posted that he was in the store after his arrest and he was referring to his "recent troubles". Believe it or not, people like this don't really believe they are doing anything wrong.
