Yep, the Diva demoed skis at Steamboat today. A truly fun experience. There's a yurt at the top of the gondola where you can go in and try as many skis as you like for either 3 hours or all day. Easy and convenient. Plus the guys in there are very accomodating. It's run by Sportstalker, a local ski shop.
First, let me tell you a bit about my skiing. I'm an advanced skier, 52 years old, 5'-1-1/2", 110 lbs. I ski primarily in New England, where as we all know, there's plenty of hard pack and ice. Not much of a bump skier, but once in a while I like to give 'em a try (if they're not too steep or icy). I like something that's lively, not too damp, and not too heavy feeling.
So here's what I tried:
Fischer Vision 73: I have been dying to try these skis, after hearing so many great things about them from Jilly. I have to say she's right. The ones I tried were 153 cm, and they were fun, lively, snappy, happy -- just tons of fun. Carving, making short turns, soft snow, ice cookies -- this one did it all. From the first run on I was grinning from ear to ear. The favorite of the day.
K2 One Luvs: 153 cm. I know a lot of people love these skis, but I had them on for one run and returned them immediately. I absolutely hated them. They were heavy and noodly, all at the same time. Not for me.
Atomic B 9:7: Not my cup of tea, either. Demoed them in 159 cm (that's all they had). Not very energetic, generally not very exciting. Just left me wanting MORE.
Volkl Attiva S5: Demoed 153 cm. A very nice ski. Not as lively as the Fischer Vision 73s, but the more I skied them, the better I liked them. Very stable, great in the long and short turns, holds an edge very well. A great carver. Second favorite of the day.
There are others I want to try, too: the new Fischer Vision Breeze, the Elan Wave Magic, the Head Power Thang, and the Volkl AC3s. So there's a lot more to go. But I think I'm off to a good start.
