Fischer Maunga/Zeal? Volkl Cosmo? Any input?

I'm looking for a midfat ski for more off-piste and powder skiing, and I've noticed some good deals on the Fischer Maunga/Zeals. It's a year or two old but it seemed to get good reviews, especially for lighter weight skiers. I liked the Head Sweet Ones I tried yesterday, but I also like my Fischer Vision 70's and do love a bargain. Does anyone know if there are any real differences between the Maungas and the Zeals? Because they are not this years model, there is no way to demo them, but they are cheap enough it's not a big hit if they aren't perfect. The other ski I thought sounded like a good fit is the Volkl Cosmo, which Sierra Skis recommended highly for women who found the Aura to be a bit too much. I'm a level 7-8 skier but I am light (5'2 and 112) and only ski 15-20 days a year, so I've found the heavier weight "expert" women's skis like the Aura's don't seem to work as well for me. Unfortunately no one seems to demo the Fischers or the Volkl Cosmos around here.

Fischer Vision Zeal

Look under Gear Reviews at Demo Day at Jackson Hole, there is a great review of the Fischer Vision Zeal.

I would really love to demo that ski too but since I am in the east they never have it on the demo van.

My next demo day is in March and I hope they have the New Fischer women's mid fat on the van.

Well, I talked to Fischer USA on the phone today and they confirmed that the Maunga and the Zeal are essentially the same ski, so I ended up just going ahead and ordering them. They were $124 new on ebay from Snow Deals and I decided to just go for it. I really like Fischers and it has the dimensions I am looking for and the reviews sound like its my sort of ski. The Fischer rep confirmed that no one has the Zeal to demo in our area. I'm going to put a pair of Knee Bindings on them next week so I'll write up a report on both the Knee Bindings and the Maunga once I get them.

Oooohhh...did you read the review on the Knee Bindings on Epic? Sounds like it might not be a good choice yet due to quality issues.

Otherwise....great deal on the skis!!!!

Very hard to find the Cosmo sold anywhere, let alone to demo. It's dimensions are very similar to the Aura but it's a twin and is a little softer. Sounds like a great ski and was rated well on Sierra and on realskiers.com.

I've had to buy a few skis without an opportunity to demo since there are few opps for wider and twin skis especially here in the NE. Some have worked out, others not. I love my Volkl Pearls that I ordered without demoing (or even seeing in person) and they have suited the purpose for which I purchased them perfectly!

Yikes...at that price and with the reviews it is VERY tempting!:decision:

I, too, love Fischers - and am about the same size/ability - let us know how you like the Maungas......I saw the same deal on ebay while looking for Zeals - and I must have spoken to the same person at Fischer while trying to find out if the construction of the 2 skis are the same, not just the dimensions.

The ski fairy came, the ski fairy came! :yahoo:After mulling it over and talking to the kneebinding company, I'm still going to try putting the kneebinding on them. There's a local shop that has the kneebindings in stock and can mount them on Friday. I just turned 40 and I figure my knees are worth it. I'll ski on them this weekend and give a report on Monday, and hopefully we'll get new snow (not rain!).
