I'm looking for a midfat ski for more off-piste and powder skiing, and I've noticed some good deals on the Fischer Maunga/Zeals. It's a year or two old but it seemed to get good reviews, especially for lighter weight skiers. I liked the Head Sweet Ones I tried yesterday, but I also like my Fischer Vision 70's and do love a bargain. Does anyone know if there are any real differences between the Maungas and the Zeals? Because they are not this years model, there is no way to demo them, but they are cheap enough it's not a big hit if they aren't perfect. The other ski I thought sounded like a good fit is the Volkl Cosmo, which Sierra Skis recommended highly for women who found the Aura to be a bit too much. I'm a level 7-8 skier but I am light (5'2 and 112) and only ski 15-20 days a year, so I've found the heavier weight "expert" women's skis like the Aura's don't seem to work as well for me. Unfortunately no one seems to demo the Fischers or the Volkl Cosmos around here.
After mulling it over and talking to the kneebinding company, I'm still going to try putting the kneebinding on them. There's a local shop that has the kneebindings in stock and can mount them on Friday. I just turned 40 and I figure my knees are worth it. I'll ski on them this weekend and give a report on Monday, and hopefully we'll get new snow (not rain!).
