FIS World Cup coming to Garmisch!

Ladies,

So I was in Garmisch (GAP) today and had a blast. I took my Canadian friend/colleague who had never been there. The good thing about this is that we went to parts of the mountain I don't usually frequent due to the questionable wind/sun conditions over there but today it was awesome! Real Aura snow - some moderate powder, lots of cut up snow, and open fresh stuff in small trees. :ski:

What the Auras DID NOT like today was the Kandahar run that will be used next weekend for the World Cup downhill race. I often ski the top part of that run, but they've graded the run all the way down, even eliminating two of our mogul runs for the event. The issue is that it rained last night on the lower part and then started to snow, so it was snow on ICE and very steep. We made it fine, but between my still tight boots and my at that point seemingly moody Auras it wasn't as much fun as I think it might have been on the BLs.

All in all a great ski day with perfect sunny weather and a great ski partner. :ski2:

In any case, I'll be there next weekend to watch the downhill and Super-G. I've never seen a professional ski race live :race:, so i am looking forward to it.

OMG! You'll have a blast at the World Cup! I've only been at the slalom and GS races we used to have here in Park City. I've heard the crowds at the downhills in Europe are totally crazy. It's quite the circus atmosphere. Be sure to tell us all about it when you get back home.

I'll be certain to report back! It's only an hour drive, but we are thinking about staying down there Sat night in case we get really caught up in the "apres ski" partying.

The partying is something you definitely have to stay for! Of course, you'll be doing lots of partying before and during the races, too! Even here in the US, in conservative Utah, there was shots of Jaegermeister and pepperment schnapps flowing!! Being in Germany, there are plenty of those good hot wine and liqueur drinks for sale at the events. I do remember all that from going to my bobsled and skeleton events at Altenberg and Konigsee.

Take pictures and post a report after the races! I've only seen the ones at Whistler they had last year on the Olympic course but it was such a blast. Go to the bib draws too--you get to be up close with the racers.

Our cable (Comcast) just got the Universal Sports channel, which shows all the races. I watch wayyy to much racing now. I have the Kitzbuhel downhill waiting for me right now.

Argh!!! So I went on Saturday and due to lack of visibility they cancelled the men's downhill and moved the women's super-g to Sunday! I had other plans for Sunday so I watched on TV. Bummer. I'll have to find one of the races elsewhere in Europe to watch.

Later in the season they are having some sort of Junior World Championships in GAP that I'll likely check out...

That is exactly what I'm afraid of when I think about planning a trip to Europe to watch a race. I saw on tv it was sunny on top, sunny on the bottom, but there was a very dense layer of fog in the middle.

Yeah, Friday and Sunday were perfect, Saturday was not. Luckily this is my home mountain, so in the end I was not put out in a major way. Just bummed since this was my one big chance! 2011 WCs will be there though, so the Divas should get together for that!

I would love to see a world cup race, sounds very cool! I do watch a lot of Universal Sports too.

I had thought about going to Beaver Creek for the men's WC races this December, and I regret not going (the weather looked great and Aksel made his comeback)...if I can swing it I will try to go this year. And if I do I'll give a shout out to see if any Divas want to meet up!

Sorry about the bad luck with the weather  That's the one problem with winter outdoor sports - we can't control the weather for the events.
