First lifts to spin in Colorado Oct. 16-17, 2021

Opening weekend is coming up in Colorado! Both Wolf Creek and ABasin plan to spin a few lifts. Wolf Creek plans to be open Sat & Sun. ABasin will open first thing Sun morning.

The snowstorm that left 14 inches at Wolf Creek and allowed ABasin to add coverage on top of snowmaking made a big difference.

Here's the details for Wolf Creek.

Wolf Creek is excited to announce the kick off of the 2021-22 ski season after 14 inches of fresh snow!

Wolf Creek will open this weekend Saturday, October 16th and Sunday, October 17th with Treasure Stoke (detachable quad), Nova (beginner double chairlift) and the Lynx (beginner conveyer lift). The slopes will be closed during the week and will reopen the following weekend. Lifts will be open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Conditions are very early season with unmarked obstacles.

Lift tickets will be at Local Appreciation Rates of $60 for adults, $41 for seniors and $31 for children. Lift tickets to the Lynx and Nova Lifts only will be $40 for all ages. Pre-purchasing lift tickets is available, but not necessary as walk-up sales will be possible. Online lift tickets can be purchased for the following day up to 8:00 PM daily. In-person lift tickets can be purchased the morning of at the Ticket Office beginning at 8:00 a.m.

Guests can enjoy the hard work of Wolf Creek’s key employees who have been moving snow and shoveling to make this early season opening happen. Trails that will be open from top to bottom are Tranquility, Treasure, Navajo Trail, and Summer Days. Other partial trails that will be available include: Bonanza Road, Powder Puff and Charisma. A scenic hike from the top of Treasure across Exhibition to Divide Trail will give access to Divide Trail and Kelly Boyce. Nova, Susan’s and Foxy will be open for beginners! This variety of terrain will be open for the weekend but may change depending on weather and snow for the following weekends.

Wolf Creek wants to educate skiers and riders that early season conditions warrant extra cautious skiing and riding; terrain can be more difficult than expected if obstacles need to be avoided or snowpack is thin. Private lessons in the ski school are available for all ages and abilities. Wolf Pups for children ages 5 to 8 years old will be available as well.

The Upper Lodge will be open, serving a delicious but limited menu. Pathfinder Bar will also be open, serving up adult beverages to skiers and boarders. The Continental Espresso Bar, located at the top of the Treasure Stoke Lift, will be open at 9:00 a.m. Ski and snowboard rentals will be available through Wolf Creek’s Ski Rental Shop and Boarder Dome.

Face coverings will be required in all indoor public settings. A full 2021-22 COVID-19 Operating Plan can be found at WolfCreekSki.com.

According to this report about opening day at ABasin, they are limiting day ticket sales to keep the number of people manageable given the limited early season terrain.

Made some turns at A-Basin this afternoon and will head over for another few hours tomorrow morning. Only one run, but lovely to get back out, as usual. Not crowded at all, but I pretty much expected that... don't really expect anyone to use an Ikon day for a WROD.

Pretty sure Wolf is skiing better than A-Basin at this point.

You can see the new restaurant in the pic below (circled). Hard to tell exactly where it is from this angle, but I think it's right where you take the hard-ish left to stay on the groomer when you're heading down from the top. Weird to see a new building up there! I think its location is as much to serve as a summer shelter for people doing the Via Ferrata on the East Wall as anything.

Keystone opened on Friday, Oct. 22.

"Keystone Resort has officially opened for the 2021-22 winter season.

For Opening Day, skiers and snowboarders will have access to more than 40 acres of terrain and nearly 2 miles of ski trail on Schoolmarm and Silverspoon. Terrain will be accessed by the River Run Gondola and the Montezuma Express lift.
. . .
Starting Friday, skiing and riding at Keystone will be offered from the top of Dercum Mountain to the bottom of the Montezuma Express lift. At the end of the ski day, guests will download the River Run Gondola back to the base of the resort.

The resort will continue to make snow to expand terrain offerings this early season, and is aiming to open the Mountain House base area and new, 6-passenger Peru Express lift in mid-November.

Just to finish off the usual suspects for opening in October, here's a video of opening day at Loveland. A bit later than usual, but they made it before Halloween.
