Fire nears lift at Sierra at Tahoe!

Oh, that is grim! I wish we could send our 3”-6” of rain today to California.

It's really grim.... heartbreaking when I saw the photo of a quad chair at Sierra at Tahoe surrounded by flames.

I've been feeling so helpless watching the devastation. Heavenly is staring down flames right now as well. I felt sickened seeing Tamarack lodge in an article about the encroaching fire. Kirkwood also at risk.

With the August 30 emergency declaration by the governor of Nevada, all emergency agencies and related divisions in the state are now all hands on deck. My son, registered search and rescue with the state, will be assisting with the evacuation of the Gardnerville, NV, shelter, which is consolidating with the Reno convention center.

NV Division of Forestry has already issued him emergency worker clothing and equipment.

The Caldor fire has “fingered” to the east, now encroaching the NV border.

There was a heartbreaking article in NYTimes several years ago about the scientific consensus around climate change and the causes thereof in the 1970s but political disagreement led to failure to act when what has now become inevitable could have been avoided … I cannot imagine the horrors my children and their children will see in their lifetimes.

It looks like all the work to save Heavenly is going to pay off. The fire is no longer moving in that direction thanks to a shift in the weather.

This is pretty unique: Snow blowers were being used at Sierra at Tahoe to spray water onto a huge propane tank and the main lodge building, which was spared from the Caldor fire Sunday night.
IIRC this was done at Sun Valley some years ago. As long as the water's available, it's a pretty effective tool!

The Tahoe ski resorts are cautiously optimistic about opening on time this season. This is from Unofficial Networks:

“Initial reports are very promising. We’ve allowed ourselves to celebrate a little bit. Our base area buildings are safe, chair lifts are still standing. You kind of think the worst when you see a fire came through Sierra, but it looks like there’s quite a few patches of green trees.” –Sierra-at-Tahoe Communications Manager Keith Lederman

Great news for everyone hoping to ski or ride South Lake in coming months as Sierra-at-Tahoe, Heavenly and Kirkwood are optimistic that they’ll be up and running for the 2021/2022 ski season after the Caldor Fire burned through the area.

Sierra-at-Tahoe faced the most danger during the wildfires but thankfully the ski resort did not suffer any major damage. Officials credit crews clearing dry brush and trees during the summer, the use of snow-making machines to wet down buildings and MOST OF ALLthe incredible work of all the brave firefighters that fought the blaze. Sierra-at-Tahoe officials hope to get back on site later this week for a full inspection.

The assessment of chair lift damage at S-A-T is ongoing. They plan to open for the 2021-22 season.

There is a GoFundMe to help employees who lost personal items left at the resort, which included personal tools they were using for summer maintenance work.

So here's the latest from Sierra-at-Tahoe on what the situation will be going into the new season. It's from their Instagram account:

Like a phoenix rising, we will emerge from the ashes to explore, learn, progress, connect, escape + most importantly, to shred ev“ry ”vailable inch of our beloved mountain with you all.

The work continues daily – in the rain, through the snow but the glimpse of the “new” to come has us daydreaming of future turns down Lower Main, stomping tricks in The Playgrounds + discovering new lines on a powder day. It will be different. How different is still unknown.

We do know that the trails + area accessed by West Bowl Express will be inaccessible this season, as we restore that section of the mountain for seasons to come. We are dedicated to keeping you informed and at the forefront of all that we do, which is why we have added a FAQ section to our Caldor Fire Updates page (link in bio). We will keep sharing answers as we learn them to all of your pressing questions and cannot wait to welcome you back to the place #WherePlayReignsFree.

As well as the West Bowl Express being closed next season, in the FAQ on their website, the resort says that the lifts Nob Hill, Short Stuff, El Dorado, and Easy Rider Express are all undergoing repairs, routine yearly maintenance, and annual inspections. The operating status for individual trails accessed by each of these lifts is still unknown as they undergo inspection and mitigation of fire-damaged trees.

The resort is still unsure when they will open for the season as there is a tremendous amount of work to be done to offer guests the quality ski experience they expect. They are hopeful to clarify an estimated timeframe for opening the resort in the coming weeks.

My son coached there for several seasons.
He wasn't that far away when the fire encroached. (15+- miles)
Way sad. :frown:

Here is the latest update from Sierra at Tahoe:

Update: November 1, 2021

Holding the vision, trusting the process.

As resorts are spinning their first chairs for the 2021/22 winter season, the yearning to join them in this historic, early opening runs deep here at Sierra. And while we're stoked for our friends Mammoth Mountain, Palisades Tahoe + Boreal Mountain in this celebratory event, the daily grind to join the winter lineup continues at the place Where Play Reigns Free.

We have substantial work ahead of us before we are able to announce our opening day for this season, and it is unlikely that we will open in 2021 - so we have set our sights on resuming operations in early 2022. With a delayed start to the season, the recent snow is a strong reminder of what we are working toward and we will not stop until we are all making laps on Grandview.

When we return to Play, we want each and every one of you to be part of building the future of Sierra. We are working on opportunities for you to leave your mark + forever be a part of our story.
