Fernie 16/17

First day at Fernie for the year today. I'm getting a late start! I spent most of the day in Cedar Bowl and skiing off Boomerang chair. One excellent run in Polar Chutes, but the wind blowing on Polar Peak, White Pass, and the top of Timber didn't encourage me to linger over there and I headed back to the old side. Coverage is great for January. No rain yet this year and lots of very cold weather, so the snow quality is excellent. Hopefully we can get through this week's warmup with no rain!

Headed up to Fernie today for some turns. I had low expectations, expecting it to be frozen off-piste up top and softening towards the bottom. I was pleasantly surprised to find it soft off the groomers at the top and all the groomers were in perfect spring shape. There was a mid-mountain transition zone where it's obviously melting and freezing daily and it was a bit hard underneath the surface snow, but overall it was great today. Dabbled in all of the bowls except Siberia and had great conditions everywhere. Coverage is still awesome, they're still reporting a 3 m base.
