Fall goings on and happenings

Since many of us love fall for a multitude of reasons I thought I'd start this so we can talk about fall, what's happening in our worlds and maybe a little bit of OMG pre ski season excitement as its "right around the corner"

Although its going to be 89 here today I am very stoked that regular season football starts in a week. I am running the football pool at my office, deadline is tomorrow so at the moment I am focused on collecting people's money, checking their names off as paid and trying to get a little work done as well.

Pumpkin flavored coffee has arrived in our local coffee shops and Halloween decorations are in some of the stores.

It's 11 C (51F) today. Rained all day yesterday. Went swimming for 1.5 hours today and it was really sunny then started chucking it down and was really dark whilst I was in the pool.

I'm hoping we get a few dry days soon as the lawn could do with one last mow before winter, I'd be surprised if it needs one after the next one.

I've seen Christmas biscuits in the shop yesterday. Not really big on Halloween here so no Halloween decorations till October. I've still got lights in the window from last year. I really need to take them down as I'm not doing Halloween this year.

well, not your typical fall goings on, but here's mine. Saw the surgeon today and am cleared to go back to work next week, so thursday it is. Cleared to ride my motorcycle and cleared to ski this season...and that's ALL that really matters! :yahoo:

Basically, I'm just looking forward to lower temps in general, and Oktoberfest.

Oktoberfest in Big Bear is always one of my favorites. I have dragged DH to Cali once for him to experience this. He wants to go back in October to do it again.

My new job is at a company that's heavily involved with college sports, so I'll be working this Saturday as we monitor the increased traffic from football. Debating still driving up to the mountains for the long weekend after I'm done, but unsure for the usual reason - traffic will be a nightmare Monday night.

My shoulder is still really annoying, but my PT seems to have a game plan, and I'm icing a lot ... *fingers crossed* that I'll be able to get back to mountain biking before it snows.

Yes. I am ready for something different.

I am working on getting my DH to do Octoberfest. I understand his reticence. There are always huge lines and then there is the driving issue. We are in this new "no child" chapter in our lives so I am going to push a little more. So far, he is a nix on Octoberfest. :frown: I don't understand it. I don't even like beer. I just want to check it out, and I feel certain that there will be a wine alternative. If not, I'm the DD.

I'm on Day 38 of a 65 day European Adventure right now.

While I'm in Dresden, I am teaching/coaching/guiding/babysitting my German friends' foster child (13 year old boy). What a great kid! This guy has taken the task of being my German Teacher very seriously, and is so patient to teach me new words and phrases. He's funny and bright, but he definitely needs some guidance with schoolwork and basic, everyday tasks. It's astonishing to see how neglectful some parents can be and the result it has on the child.

I think that anyone who would take on a foster teenager is amazing and they have my Respect. Their love, time, and patience will build his trust. If anyone can do it, they can.

I just booked my Zillertal (Austria) vacation with them for February this week. The child will join us for his first ski adventure. I can't wait.

I'm in, so is G, I think. I've never been. I'm not a big beer drinker but I like sampling. If @surfsnowgirl comes out with her DH all the way from East Coast, that's another mini-diva event, if we can get the dates to jive.

The annual Internat'l Street Food Fair is happening this weekend. I think I'm going on Sunday, to help friends man the Danish booth making apple skeevers. That's a big event traditional for Labor Day weekend. Later in the fall, I hope to make it up to Solvang for winery party and to Julian for the apple pies. October might be a busy month of fun.

Endless projects and chores. Fall is arguably our busiest season here. In addition to one big project - pulling up carpeting, pad (and heaven knows what's beneath it...) and installing laminate in a sizable room - we have now discovered a completely rotted window frame. Thus --- need to replace the whole thing. Have never done this before. First time for everything?

Will "come up for air" probably by 2nd week of November. I *think* I know where my ski boots are....some years they go on for the first time when I get to the lodge for first day out.

Was coming out of the casino last night at around 1am and while waiting for the valet guy to bring me my Jeep and for the first time I noticed it was getting fabulously chilly. I had a sleeveless shirt and was happily a tad chilly. Almost getting to be the time where I have a sweatshirt with me for these times.

Regular season football starts in 4 days, this is the true kickoff for fall for me.

As it turns out, I enjoyed working Saturday. I wasn't much involved in monitoring, as they wanted me working on a code fix I've been wrangling with. There were far fewer people in the office, so it was relatively quiet. I got a lot done. Everyone who worked this weekend is supposed to get a three day weekend of their choice at some point - I was thinking of doing next week Friday, because DH is out of town anyway, but DH is encouraging me to take a Friday off during ski season instead. Which is a good point, and to be honest I kind of don't want to take off a day just yet - there's a lot going on I don't want to miss. But I'm concerned about an off the books comp day getting lost - especially as our team lead abruptly departed on Friday and we don't know exactly what will happen next in that regard. So I'll try to suss it out next week.

We haven't driven up yet, so I guess we're not going to. Two evenings ago, DH's computer abruptly stopped working, followed by an acrid smoke smell. He thinks the capacitor blew on one of the components - probably the graphics card, as he reported that something is rattling inside it (yikes!). He bought a new card from Best Buy, but shortly thereafter, it stopped working again, so he took the power supply from my old computer (that died a few months ago, and which always had blue screen issues, so all the components are suspect), and it started but wouldn't detect his drives, and he's concerned that he wasn't paying attention and put cables with the wrong voltages on his drives, which would destroy them.

I'm not looking for tech support here - we are more than capable on that side - but just trying to indicate what's going on and how enormously annoyed my husband is. I'm sure he was looking forward to a long weekend of playing computer games, and instead my guess is he'll take the drives to work today to analyze them (he works in the drive industry and has all sorts of tools that normal humans don't have).

@bounceswoosh Glad you had a good saturday at work. I vote for using a friday to take advantage of ski season, especially since they are giving it to you for working saturday so its not like you are on your taking a day off so new on the job  Hope DH gets his computer stuff worked out and get some game playing time. My DH writes code and just loves his computer games to decompress.

Turned the downstairs a/c unit off today. Hopefully it will stay off for good now. Hoping the temps stay under control. Tomorrow is supposed to be a gorgeous day so we'll do the usual farmers market thing and then head to the Casino for a free show at the Wolf Den. The Outlaws are playing, some southern rock band that DH likes. I love live music so sure why not. Last week at Blues Travelers I won 30 bucks playing video poker so any of that is an added bonus also.

We had to cancel our mountain biking at Mount Snow on sunday because DH had a tooth extracted and they told him no mountain biking. Its supposed to downpour anyway so its just a sign that we are meant to watch football

Ski club open house tonight for one of our two local ski clubs. Let the pre ski season excitement start. Time to collect stickers, get some food, talk to reps from the different mountains and maybe win some lift tickets. I am so excited.....
