Ever go to a mountain that you thought you'd wouldn't like very much and ended up thinking it was terrific? Or vice versa? And if so, why?

Yep!!

I haven't skied very long, only one season - actually half a season lol. Where I live we don't have mountains, we have bumps. Okay, maybe we have a few hills. Anyway, it was my very first time on skis and one look at the bunny hill and I wanted to leave!!! It just seemed so steep for the term, "bunny hill" (but what did I know, I've never skied before lol). After that first time down the hill (it took me a longgggg time to get down, I was scared and for some reason kept turning my skis inward making a pizza slice shape), I was hooked!!!

I improved my technique within the hour, had plenty of support from my brother, even though he is a snowboarder, and just kept a positive attitude throughout the day. I NEVER thought I would have liked skiing so much. Like I said, when I saw the hill I really wanted to go home. But after many times down the easy runs, and hitting a few blues, I had a true passion and love for the sport.

I still have MUCH to improve on but am looking forward to a full season of skiing!!! :snow: Let's hope we all get a good hit of snow :becky:

I definitely have "favorite" mountains and I also have mountains that I prefer NOT to go to if given the choice.

But, some of those reasons that I held on to were d/t my own comfort level as a skier. As, I've become as better skier and more confident in my own abilities, it is more about getting a ski day in, then it is about skiing my favorites.

I am so fortunate here in Colorado that within two hours of Denver I have 10 resorts I can go to on any given day. Whether skiing by myself or with friends, I have the option of choosing where to go by snow & weather report.

Yeah...it's ok to hate me!:eyebrows:

So...aside from the fact that, yes I do hate you, yeh right...exactly what hospital are you affiliated with? I also work in a hospital and would absolutely love to be where you are! I do three twelves and have four off to work in my own business. It's great really, and I can be on my local mountain in 90 minutes IF there is any snow that year.

In the Denver metro area, there are 16 hospitals (that I can think of right now) within, I would say a, 30 mile radius of each other. Three Level One trauma centers and a Children's Hopsital are included in those numbers. What makes that nice, is that people can find the place where they fit in. I also work 3 twelves...just weekends (Fri-Sun) with Mon-Thurs off. Our shifts are 3a-3p..which really sucks. But, again, only three days a week and I get 4 days in a row to play!:ski2:

Yes, I been to many hyped up areas to find them lacking. One in particular comes to mind is Whiteface. Yah its an olympic mountain, but the locals have it right by calling it Iceface. Its the same travel distance as Tremblant, but I'll take Tremblant instead.

My surprise mountain was "The Porkies". I'd always avoided Porcupine Mountain when we headed for our week in the UP because they only have 2 chairs and a couple of T-Bars. Given the quantity and quality of the other 4 resorts in that area, and the added drive to The Porkies, it was never on my list of "have to's".

When we finally did make it up there, surprise!!! We had a blast! The lodge was really nice, the views were spectacular, the grooming was stellar, and the variety of runs was astounding.

Chaning my mind about a resort? Plenty!

Mountain Creek:
- frst didn't give it much thought. Too small.
- But a few trips midweek was super nice and I changed my mind.
- That was followed by a weekend visit which convinced me NEVER AGAIN ON WEEKEND!
- 2 years ago, I had a terrible experience MIDWEEK. That's the end of my interest in that mountain. So, yes, I changed my mind twice about it. And judging from the posts in Alpinezone, I'm not the only one. MC simply got worse the past few years.

Killington falls into the same catagory.
- Hate it as a beginer.
- Love it as an advanced intermediate.
- Then hate it again when they start going downhill in service.

Vail:
- Love it the first time. Those glorious bowls!!!
- But...thoss 45 min long lines to get back up the ridge! I had enough and gone to Copper instead. Besides, all the bowls look & ski alike, and they are FLAT!
- This April, following the epic bears, I explored the newer part of the bowls. Yeah, I'll go back, for the perfectly spaced trees of Skyline Basin.

As a region, I had the same feeling about the Colorado areas (actually those along I-70).
- They were great for a few years becaue they're such ego boosting wide open non-threatening terrains.
- But after a while, I started getting bored. They're too flat.
- Although nowadays, with the emphsis on tree skiing, I find it tolerable again.

I don't have such a flip-flopping feeling about mountain at Utah or Tahoe. They're more or less what they appear.

You apparently aren't skiing the right areas of Colorado terrain. There are plenty of steep areas both in and out of trees.

For me Breckenridge comes to mind. I'm still not a huge fan but I now know, thanks to Katy Perrey, that there are areas of the mountain that are fun and challenging enough to keep me entertained if friends want to hit that mountain.

I used to hate Sugar Bowl. I had the chance to ski there more (Ski bus trips) and explored a lot more. Now I really like it. Its turned into one of my favorites in Tahoe.

SnowBasin Utah. Can't feel the love. I've been there three times and still find the layout awkward. Never enjoyed myself there...not even in the granite-stalled bathrooms.

I've never been there, but this is the first time I've ever heard anything negative about SnowBasin. I'm not picking on you because I know this is your personal feel, but it just surprised me.:noidea:

Eh, sometimes that happens. I've never really gotten why everyone thinks Vail is sooooooo awesome. I mean, it's a great mountain, and it's huge, but I don't think it's THE AWESOMEST MOUNTAIN IN THE UNIVERSE or anything. I guess it probably wins out if you want to stay in the same place for your whole trip and never ski the same thing twice, but otherwise I've enjoyed other mountains in CO and UT more.

Snowbasin

This is the place I would like to change my mind about. It really is a beautiful mountain, and the amenities are great. My husband enjoys Snowbasin, so we go. I prefer Powder Mountain, just up the road. I cannot quite explain why Snowbasin and I don't mesh. (Skiing is fun just about anywhere!) Honestly, I think it is the layout...trails are not very well marked; it is easy to find yourself where you least expected to be. Perhaps this season will be the one where I fall in love. I'm willing!

Badger, maybe I can join you on your next journey to SnowBasin, so I can have my first SB experience and you can experience through a newbee's eyes. :D

Ok Snowhot, you've got a deal. And since there are never any lines at the lifts, we'll have plenty of time to ski, perhaps get lost for a bit, and then head off to the very nicely-appointed shop for some jacket envy. (bring money). Would you be up for Powder Mountain too? Bear in mind that my skiing ability will be no match for yours, but I learn fast and would love an excuse to give SB another chance.

This happen to anyone this season?

Yes. Killington. Haven't been in forever, and probably wouldn't have it at the top of my list of places I'd want to go. But finally got to ski with a buddy that has been going for decades, and he gave me his tour. We like to ski the same stuff, so it was 8a-4pm of pure pleasure with my own private tour guide, stopped long enough to suck down a water. If I was on my own, I know it would not have been nearly as good. Then he gave me a similar tour of Mad River Glen...omg.
