Emoticons

This is a bit off the topic. But with all the flashy icons, we really need some simple ones to give a hint of "tones": like, shouting, wink, shrug, etc. which we can quickly insert into the post to help get the emotions across.

I know we have emocations. But they're not easy to use. And I for one, don't like to use the "advance" screen... then, I can't access most of the emocations.

I like that, a "hint of tones". I can appreciate that, I have a dry sense of humor, hard to interpret when you can't see my expressions.:fear:

The above two posts were originally in another thread, but I moved them here because I have a feeling this is going to generate a lot of discussion (for some reason, emoticons do).

Let me try to address this:

This is a bit off the topic. But with all the flashy icons, we really need some simple ones to give a hint of "tones": like, shouting, wink, shrug, etc. which we can quickly insert into the post to help get the emotions across.

One of the limitations of written communication is that there are no facial or audio clues to go along the words. However, it's impossible to have emoticons for everything. Some things just can't be communicated with little tiny pictures; tone of voice and sarcasm, for example.

I think the best thing we can do is to try to frame our posts, as best as we can, to reflect what we have in mind. Keep in mind that people can't see or hear you, and that in many cases, they don't know your personality, either. So choose your words carefully. And if this involves saying, "I'm being sarcastic here," then so be it.

I don't mean to be harsh, but there are a TON of emoticons to choose from; more than most forums seem to have. Some people love them, some people hate them and have difficulty using them. Personally, I think they're fun. Whatever you think, we have them here as an option. If you want to use them, fine. If not, then don't.

I'm reluctant to add any more, unless there's one that's so amazing and so fantastic that I can't pass it up. I mean, the list could go on and on and on forever.

And since you can't hear the tone of my voice, here's a disclaimer: this is not being said in an aggravated or annoyed manner; I'm merely trying to explain and inform here.

So I'll get off my soapbox and wait for the bricks to fly:
:brick:

BTW, for those of you who care to, you can always use emoticons you find elsewhere. SnowHot does this all the time. You merely import them in the same way you'd import a photo.

I understand the use of symbols when typing so you don't have to use the cursor to pick a smiley.

I'm a typist by nature and I used to use the things like :?: for the confused face.
would it help if we posted a list of the written symbols for the basic emoticons?
I'd bet that you'd get used to the "typed out" version of your favourites in no time at all.

like : + D = :D

For the record, I love all the new emoticon options!

BTW, if you're interested in using only the most basic emoticons, here's what we have. They're all in the top two lines of the emoticon box.

 happy
:( sad
 confused
 :mad2: angry
 wink
:D :becky: grin
 cool
:p sticking out tongue
 rolling eyes
 shocked or eek
 laugh

I second that.

Yes, I'm also a touch typist and don't usually bother with the mouse to pick the smileys.

Moreover, in quite many other online boards, there're some semi-standardization of smileys. Here's a few more: ;) is for wink, lol often brings out the laughing head, etc.

And the beauty of these semi-standard shorthands are: even on boards that don't have smileys, people understand these and actually I developed an automatic reaction to them=> laughing when I see lol! And I know I'm not the only one.

Then, when I type ;) on boards WITH emoticons, the "winky" shows up! I'm not likely to learn the individual "name" for each and every board I post on. So, it's either I type those shorthand and people understand it, or a smiley shows up which is even better. Otherwise, it got "lost in translation". And sometimes as a result, a joke was taken literally and someone was offended. :(

The only one I've wanted several times that we don't really have is a good "embarrased" one.

(and when did "brr" show up?)

BTW...
Wendy,
You have done an AMAZING job of compiling all we need here! Don't worry.....we'll find it if we need it!

Here's an embarrassed one:

and more embarrassed ones:

I have to go pee.....there's no emoticon for that! :ROTF:

Yeah, not a complaint at all, but I do miss the old embarrassed one, that we had before all the new emoticons came in. Is it still around?

Kimmyt's emoticon TR should be awesome.

Colors!

Embarrassment is ALWAYS red in all other forums I've been to! (you blush when you're embarassed, right? Not cheery and happy. )

There's this general rules on the web that warm/light color is for "good/happy" emotican and dark/cold color is for not-so-happy ones...

All the yellow "embarrassment" ones breaks that rule and hints that's a desireable emotion...

Here's the little guy I was talking about
redface.gif

Though now that I look, I see he's an option for a post/thread icon. I guess we just don't have him in in-post our emoticon list?

I might've gotten rid of him when I added some of the newer ones.

Does everyone really want an emoticon for embarrassment????

Personally, I like
redface.gif
as a sheepish face to go with my dumb questions. I bet Liquidfeet would go for trading out :ski: and bringing
redface.gif
back.

Wow those words got jumbled around. Since it's too late to edit, what I meant to say was "I guess we just don't have him in our in-post emoticon list".
