Elan help

Hi, have been browsing for a while but thought I would ask for some advice. I am 5'9 about 190lbs, ideal weight would be 170lb
I am fairly athletic and have very strong legs as I cycle everyday and go mountain biking most weekends. I have skied for about 6 weeks and can handle most European reds but struggle in bumps and on reds. I live and ski a lot in Scotland where the snow is often not groomed like it is in the Alps.
Last year I was on holiday in Slovenia and bought a set of Magfire 12s in 160cm on the reccomendation of the Instructor I had that holiday, he said that they were gvery good skis and that i would love them in a year
I have skied 3 weeks on them and struggled a bit at first as I found them very tiring. After a while I really got in to them and found they helped me improve as they were very hard work if I skied badly, but the better I skied the easier they seemed to get. HOWEVER I do not get on my edges enough and don't think these skis are helping me in that area at all. I recently demoed some skis indoor and felt I was using the edges much more.
There are some really cheap mag 8s and 10s on ebay just now and I am very tempted to buy a pair and keep the mag 12s till I grow into them, I don't know which ones to go for though and would not be able to demo them before buying. I skied my friends K2 recons in 160cm on holiday and felt I was really getting them on edge but they felt a bit unstable so I think I would have prefered a 168cm. I have also tried and liked Nordica Eliminators and Dobermanns and Head XRC800s.
I want a ski that is softer than my mag 12s and that is slightly easier to use in the bumps but am worried that the mag 8 won't be enough of a ski or if I get the mag 10 it won't be that much different from my mag 12. The mag 8 and 10 also have a bigger sidecut than the mag 12 which I think will help me as well.
Sorry for the very long and rambling first post, thanks for any help

Welcome to The Ski Diva Lyns

Are the Elan Mag12's the 07 or 08's? They had different dimensions for 07.

If they're the 08's then you're 82 under foot and the ski is made for an aggressive skier. The Mag 8's and 10's are narrower under foot and will likely allow you to relax a bit.
If you can get a deal, then go for it!

Keep the Mag 12's for those days when you'd like a bit more waist and some power skiing and rip it up on the 8's!!

Hi Lynseyf and welcome!
I have had the Magfire 12s for two seasons, so I'm very familiar with them.
In my opinion, these skis are very demanding. They need to be driven hard, and they are quite unforgiving, not to mention heavy.
I really like mine, but I have another pair of skis for soft snow/powder days.
Maybe you're right about growing into the Mag 12s. At this stage, you might want to consider demoing more forgiving skis and choosing something that, for now anyway, is more fun.

They're the 07 mag 12's, they are quite demanding but the 160cm for my height and weight is quite short so I don't find them too bad, just as I say when its bumpy, which it was a lot this year or when i'm going down really narrow bits and have to make tight turns. I love the extra confidence they give me to go faster and they are so stable when the snow is a bit cruddy. I won't be able to demo these skis as they are a very cheap deal off ebay....... so you think i should go for the 8s in 168cm?????
thanks for the replies

Absolutely!
If they are a good deal, then you won't have any trouble selling them to get your money back if you find you don't like them, but I'm guessing that you'll find value in having different skis for different demands.
Are the Mag 8's (2008) With a sidecut of 123/73/104
- you should find that ski a very nice compliment to the -
