Dynastar Marie Martinod Pro model?

Severine

Ski Diva Extraordinaire
Mainly because I'm intrigued by the fact that I can find virtually no information about these on the internet... I'm curious what the Divas' opinions are on this ski:

https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=120182310555&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=002

Yes, I know, demo, demo, demo. But for that price (seeing as money is an issue with us), is it worth throwing down the cash? It's not a huge investment. I'm thinking this may be useful as that midfat that SnowHot loves to tell everyone they need. But then again, I am admittedly clueless right now about gear (trying to learn) and all I know is that the waist makes it qualify as a midfat. Sounds like it might be useful as an all mountain ski (from what I've been reading about fatter skis actually being better as all-mountain than carving skis) even though it's a "park ski".

Anyone want to educate me? Or have an opinion on my meandering thoughts?

ETA: This is an example of the very little info I can find:

With the typical sales line that I've found everywhere: For New Schoolers looking for a high performance ski with excellent control for slopestyle and the pipe.

I'm not familiar with dynstar, but tcarey is very knowledgeable about the dynastar line. Hopefully she'll take time from her snow adventures at okemo long enough to post here.

For the price I don't think you can go wrong here. It's always nice to have a ski for different conditions.I think they could be alot of fun!
That's pretty much what I was thinking. If for some reason it's not the ski for me, I could probably sell them for close to what I paid at the ski swap next year. In the meantime, it might be fun to have something in addition to my Dynastar Nova cruiser skis.

I'm not familiar with this Dynastar model either, though we (DH & I) own 6 pairs of Dynas right now. I'm a huge fan of this brand, especially the women-specific models.

I saw this listing also and was intrigued - you are right about the price! I am familiar, however, with this ebay seller, SnowDealsNow - his name is Todd, and he's based in PA. I've bought at least 3 pairs of skis from Todd, and he's great. If you are really going to do it, shoot him an e-mail and ask about binding compatibility - most Dynastars take Looks, and there are some models that won't take just any model (as I discovered from experience).

If you buy from Todd, rest assured that he will ship asap and package beautifully. Another good online merchant for this brand is evogear - more so the Looks than Dynastars. Good luck, let us know how it goes!

The reference for the seller means a lot to me. It helps to hear personal experience when trying to decipher a myriad of reviews. Thank you!

So far, hubby and his pals are very much against the purchase. Funny how differently men view these things (mind you, hubby has 5 pairs of skis to my one).

Logically, I probably should wait. Then again, logic always kills all the fun. It's hard not to be excited. And I've always been one of those people who wants to be prepared for every possibility - versatility is key. So having a 2nd, very different pair of skis appeals to me.

I suppose it won't kill me to wait. Will it? ..... tick tick tick tick

That lasted all of...7 hrs.

Hubby gave the go-ahead. I will have a pair of Dynastar Marie Martinod Pro model skis on the way shortly! There was much deliberation over bindings (he recently bought a pair of Head Mad-Trix Moguls with Look PX12 demo bindings and considered making me use those instead of the Look NX10 bindings I was able to get with these skis from this seller) but we decided to go with the NX10s as they're lighter. (He did admit that he wanted me to use his bindings because he had second thoughts about them and figured this way we could save some money...)

In any case, new toy on the way! :D Can't wait to try them out!!

ETA: Here's the link to the auction with the bindings (I didn't post it before as there was only 1 available and I was coveting it )

Severine, that's great news! You won't be disappointed with the Look NX10's. I used Px10's for years (same as px12 with lighter spring) and loved them, especially the heel. Then I wound up with nx10's - while I wasn't as crazy about the heel, I definitely loved the lighter weight of the binding. And the skis themselves are also light, so the whole package is a breeze to carry. But I have never skied anything with a 81 waist (wow) - I'll be interested in hearing your review! Hope you have the same great luck with the ebay merchant that I have had, and the same with Dynastars!! :ski2:

Congratulations! New gear is always good news, and you got a steal. Don't even have to sit around waiting for months and months to use them.

MaineSkiLady - Good to hear that!!!! We spent a lot of time thinking and talking about the bindings situation so I'm happy to hear that there actually is a significant difference between the two. Especially since his PX12s are the demo bindings, so they're even heavier. Now I just need to find a new ski shop this year that can mount them... our old shop has screwed up too many times recently for us to return there. BTW, the model skis I purchased were last year's which were a little slimmer in the waist - 78cm. Still pretty wide, though. :D I can't wait!

It may take me a couple times out to get my ski legs back, but I'm really looking forward to giving these a go!

ETA: Does that mean I have a quiver now? I have 2 pairs! LOL!

The PX12 spring is pretty heavy - I think the max DIN is like 12. The PX10's are 3-10. The NX's are 2.5-9, or something in that general vicinity. The rule of thumb is that it's best to be somewhere in the middle of the DIN numbers for maximum effectiveness. I came in at 5.5 on the PX10's, and I'm at the same number on the NX's. DH, who just got PX12's, got bumped down from 7 (his usual setting on 10's) to a 6, which certainly says something about the heaviness of the spring in the 12's. No doubt, you are going to be a happy camper. I'd be more comfortable with a 78 mm waist also (hmmm, maybe I should have popped for those skis :eyebrows: !). I'll sure be curious to hear how you like them!

That's a nice looking ski! And that price can't be beat! Please report back when you've had some time on them.

Looks like it might be a good all-mountain type ski. Oh, gee, and there's another pair up for sale on e-bay...:eyebrows:

So ... how are you liking the skis? I am looking at this same pair - in 165s. I just moved to Utah from Oregon and I have NO powder experience to speak of - but have been skiing for 10+ years at intermediate/advanced level!

I just don't know what to do with all this wonderful powder, though :-)

I am also on a budget - and was thinking these Dynastar Marie's might be good {saw them on ebay then googled for reviews and found this forum}.

Just curious if you like them - and how they do in powder situations? I don't actually want a full-on POWDER ski, but more all-mountain that will work both in powder and on groomers.

I'm also unsure of what length to get - going to demo a pair of 165s just to see before I buy - but from what I've read, that will work for me {for my height, weight and ability}.

Hope those skis are treating you nicely!!!

Hey Madeline , Thanks for bumping this thread up as I'd missed it before. Welcome to theskidiva forum !

Severine , report back . Have you skied them yet ? How were they ?
With all the snow ya'll have back East you ought to have tried them by now ?

I can't get into the technical aspects because... well, I'm just not well-versed in all that. I'm a low-intermediate skier who came back this season after a nearly 4 year hiatus and I only had 1 season under my belt. So take that for what's it's worth in my assessment of these skis.

I  them! I've only used them on the local ski hill but they've served me well in the 6 times I've been out on them. Awesome in fresh manmade, the teeny bit of powder I've encountered, crud, loose granular... not bad on hardpack. Not great on ice, but nothing is. I tried going back to my Dynastar Novas after taking these for a spin and I HATE my Novas now. They feel squirrely and unstable in comparison (when I was comfortable on them before trying the Maries).

They're forgiving but with the bindings mounted a little in front of the midsole boot mark (and by having all that extra tail) you do notice it pretty quickly if you get too much in the backseat. Which is a good thing, I need work in that area. LOL.

Can't comment on skiing them in "real" powder as I haven't gotten out for any powder days. But they've been awesome in what I have thrown at them.

If it helps any in finding reviews, I think I read after buying them that they're basically the same ski as Dynastar She's Trouble, just different graphics. Just make sure you're looking at the right model year for reviews.

ETA: BTW, the length feels great. I used to ski 140cm skis which were unstable at speed (gee,I wonder why!). The Novas are 154cm and now feel too short. I have the 165cm Maries and they're perfect. I'm just under 5'5" but I'm on the heavy side after having 2 kids. Working on changing that...

Thank you for the reply :-) Much appreciated! It sounds like we are probably the same height and body-type as well - so maybe these would be PERFECT for me!!!

Today is a Powder Day at Snowbird, but the canyon is closed for avalanche clearing, so no chance in getting up there today!

Fingers are crossed for tomorrow - and if so ... I'm going to try to do a demo pair. If I like 'em ... I'm going for those Maries :-)

Thanks so much for the review! And I'll write back if I try the Marie's in Powder!

I have another question - as I'm reading this thread, there are comments made about the "waist" - for example, "never skied anything with a 81 waist (wow)" - MaineSkiLady ...

What exactly is a Waist and why do I care? :-)

I believe I am looking for a Firmer ski {firmer is for more aggressive and softer for less-aggressive, is that right?}

Am I getting this right? Also - any explanation on the "Waist" would be really helpful to me! :-) Thanks! ~Madeline in Utah
