In camo by the trees, yeah that's a really dumb idea.
I've come across people who don't really ski away from the lift and congregate with their friends there, right in the way of anyone trying to get off the lift. Close enough that if a few more people were in their group, they'd get hit by the chair swinging around.
I remember reading on here some time ago that someone was skiing with their husband (boyfriend maybe?) and went past a family stopped on a run with their baby on the ground, its head inches from the edges of passerbys skis. That one really stuck with me as a dumb idea.

My husband tied his jacket around his waist once ( he grabbed it from the bottom of the lift on the last run so he wouldn't have to go back and get it ) and it got stuck on the lift and it carried him around the bullwheel. It crept up and almost hung him. That was dumb. I therefore always think people whom wear things like camelbacks on the outside of their coats need to be warned. They have been known to attach themselves to lifts and drag their users also.

Oh boy where to start? Stopping on a cat track perpendicular and around a curve so they take up the majority of the track.
The lifties who weren't watching and had a child get pushed off the chair while loading but whose coat was caught. They didn't see it until way too late (when other guests were yelling at the lifties) and the poor girl had to hang off the chair for the ENTIRE lift ride up while ski patrol followed on a snowmobile below encouraging her. The only two other people on the chair were two 8 year old female racers from my team and they were trying to help hold on to her but are quite small themselves.
Fortunately she made it up. 
There's a reason I don't like to ski at that resort.
The idiots who don't rack their skis when going into the lodge so everyone else has to trip over them to get their skis racked or unracked. My head coach will hide racers skis if he catches them doing this. :ROTF:

Oh here's another good one, people racking all their skis on one side of those little metal double sided ski racks. While said ski rack was perched precariously on a slanting area of ground. And which tipped over, taking all skis and snowboards racked on it with it.
I can't get over that one about the little girl on the lift, Robyn! If I were her, it would be hard to get on a lift after that!

This used to happen where we skied all the freaking time. My daughter was in this position ( not with coat caught necessarily ) but not completely loaded more than once. We have a picture she drew in kindergarten of her crying hanging from the chairlift. They tried to load her at 5 with a snowboarder who I was told couldn't have been more than 7 whom fell upon loading and evidetially grabbed her and pulled her partially off the lift. Instead of stopping the lift, when he could still get her off, he told her to hang on tight. A woman skiing under the lift, don't know who she was, with gold skis according to my daughter, stopped and coached her up for as long as she could yell to her. The scary thing is we have a snowmaking pond just beyond the loading point. ( different chair ) I have more than once seen kids hanging from the chairllift over this pond, where they had to slow the lift down to get the child across the pond to remove them. We finally after this incident called the owner and... I was hung up on. Evidentially they got the clue though, because the lift ops have been much much more competent in recent years.

It is pretty cute, now. What I love is the woman in the gold skis is in it! It wasn't as cute at the parent teacher conference, the tears are very large. And you know, they trained to look out for stuff like that,
so they did ask. Fortunately we saw the lady in the gold skis and could immediately tell them what was going on in the picture. Oh dear god. I do laugh now. We have multiple friends whom watched this happen ( how we know what happend ) who didn't have kids at the time but do now, and are still too freaked out to let their kids ski there. Now that time has passed, and I do think they have gotten better, we just and laugh and tell them we figure that if they learn to ride those lifts, they'll be able to ride anywhere.

Just this past Wednesday I almost skied over a snowboarder who was sitting on the slope dressed head to toe in white.
To their credit, the snowboarder was off to the side, but I didn't see him until I was almost on top of him!

I'm sorry, but the lift situations explained really bother me. Hubby works as a lift op supervisor and I'm a scanner part time at a local ski hill. I can't imagine anyone there partially loading a child and then telling them to "hang tight". :mad: Totally unacceptable!!!!

Oh, trust me, it bothers me as well. I think it's unacceptable to not have at least one person who is watching to make sure each chair is loaded properly. This girl just lined up wrong so when she tried to sit down she was smack on the edge and was pushed to the side without a chair and then her coat got caught. Total freak accident but you're right, the lifties should have caught it long before the girl had to ride all the way up.

We saw a similar thing happen while skiing in Canada over the holidays. A child kind of slid off the seat of the lift while loading, and hung there until the liftie stopped it. Luckily, she didn't have more than a couple of feet to fall at that point. She was really scared, though, which is not good when you're learning....
We also had several people lose skis in front of us as they were getting on the lift. They were all rentals, and our guess was the bindings were not properly set. Either way, we ended up carrying four skis up on the lift.

I am grateful for fabulous lift operators where we usually ski with the kids. If we hit a lift that seems to have an inexperienced operator, we usually move to another part of the mountain until the operators rotate.
The dumbest thing that came to mind this season was my own fault. Dh and I decided not to ski one day the beginning of the season after a big snowfall so he could catch up on some work (and the resort had been closed the previous 3 days). That afternoon we got an email photo of the snow that had accumulated on the chairlift at our local resort.

YUP, talk about feeling dumb..... big missed opportunity. Work will always wait, but the snow won't!! Next time I'll go alone if I have to.

Bad idea: People walking long distances across the parking lot to/from the car in their ski boots. I can't figure this one out. Not only are ski boots uncomfortable for long walks, you risk ruining the boot sole.
I don't know if this is a dumb idea or just a pet peeve of mine: People bringing skis & boards into the lodge. Signs on the doors say "NO EQUIPMENT INSIDE LODGE" and people walk right by, then lean their snow-covered stuff against a table. Grr.

OMG, dumb ideas I've seen in my skiing life.....I think I could write a book here. Dumb idea I experienced today: when flying out of the glades - and not even a marked glade, mind you - don't bother slowing down before re-entering the main trail -- unless the SKI DIVA you're about to hit starts SCREAMING AT THE TOP OF HER LUNGS at you to HEY, HEY, STOP! No harm, no foul? It was a boarder, and a BIG boarder, but if he'd hit me, I HAD POLES. Just never ends. Don't get me started....
.....otherwise, and despite 3 or 4 other similar incidents, it was a very nice day of skiing.

Are you talking about paved lots? I do this pretty often actually, our lot is not paved, but we don't have a huge parking lot, so if it gets full you have to park down the road. I find it easier to just put my boots on and go straight to the lift rather than break a sweat then go inside and change and then back out? No way I'm straight to the lift. I have done no significant damage to my boots. You can replace these parts if they become worn though. And sometimes, if you head out earlier than the sand truck or hit the opposite side he left from, you can ski right from your last run to the car.

Yeah, paved lots are pretty hard on boot soles. And not all boots have replaceable soles on them!
