Does your mom ski?

With Mothers Day approaching, it made me wonder: who has a mom that skis?

My mom never did. She hates the cold (lives in Florida now), and came from an era -- or a background, at least -- where sports and women just didn't mix. Her attitude changed as she got older. When I was in college she started an exercise program. And now that she's in her late 70s, she walks 2 miles every morning.

But even though she never skied, she was always supportive of my skiing, as well as in my participation in all sorts of activities. And for that, I'm grateful.

My parents both ski, but very rarely. If the weather if perfect (30-35, sunny, no wind) they'll head to the local hill (Mt. Southington, CT) for 3 or 4 hours. They also use the *oldest* equipment... some Olan Mark IV's (?) from the late 70's. I'm trying to tell them how some new skis that weigh half as much and are 10cm shorter will make everything easier for them, but they're really just not interested in buying new skis at this point.

I'm hoping to get them up to VT one weekend next winter - we'll see!

My mom thinks I'm crazy for hurtling down a hill at high speeds with long sticks strapped to my body.

She thinks most of the stuff I do is crazy, but kinda views my hobbies with amazement and is always telling her friends about 'what my crazy daughter did on her vacation!'.

She's pretty cool though, she likes to weightlift and do pilates and traditional gym things, but her knees have been bothering her lately so she has been slowed down a little.

That's my mama too. Whenever someone mentions diving or skiing or anything in the genre, she always tells them that they should get together with me.

She doesn't ski or play any sports. She likes walking in the forest preserves and along the lake, camping and that kind of stuff.

Her "you're crazy for that!"ness is not so much about me doing things that aren't safe, but about me spending money to do so. Every gear purchase, lift ticket, sports related lodging expense leaves her in wonder. Why do I spend money for physical exertion? Can't I just run?

(Then again, this is the mother in the family who never ice skated, but instead went to frozen bodies of water to slide around in our shoes. Then there was that time one of us cracked the ice on Lake Michigan and fell in...at least it was free!)

Maybe that is her way of telling you that you need to go out and buy some shorter skis with more sidecut? ;)

No.

My mom took pride telling people the only course she ever flunk in school was Physical Ed!

She does exercise now. But it doesn't change the fact she's horrably un-coordinated and can fall off a bicycle when no one is around. :( Her distain for physical activity (not lady like) in her younger days now limits her ability to enjoy herself. I think she knows that now. That's why she no longer bugs me about my wasting my time skiing, biking and kayaking...

Fortunately, I took the sports gene from my dad, who "plays every ball that's round"! ;)

Indeed my mother did ski when she was like 18-22ish. Then she got married and stopped skiing, moving to the south with my father who had enlisted in the Air Force to hopefully avoid being sent to Vietnam. She occasionally claims that she would like to ski again but I know it's meaningless as she doesn't tend to follow through on such things and really is not in any physical shape to be doing it...

My father thinks it's all a big joke, essentially anything I do. The only physical activity he does is bike to work...

My mom did ski, and she got me and my sister into it when we were kids. She and my dad and my aunt and uncle would ski together in Michigan, and spent one vacation in VT. Mr. Sheena and I were planning to go to VT to ski this past January, and my mom brought out some old picture when she was skiing at Mad River Glen in the early 70s. They stopped skiing when my mom started having kids. When I was 8, she started taking us on annual ski trips. She kept it up til I graduated from high school, then went out once or twice on her own, then stopped about 7 years ago.

I finally convinced her to get out one day this season. She had a lot of fun, and is thinking of getting a season pass this year!

No, my Mom does not ski. I wish she did, then maybe she would understand my love for it. I seem to be the only person in my immediate family with any athletic inclinations.
I love to ski with my daughter, but she is at an age where she has to be convinced to go ! I hope that she continues to ski throughout her life, so that when I am old, she will pick me up on the way to the hill.
I think I should also get her some golf lessons......
I think my Mom looks at me and questions why I spend money on gear and lift passes (as someone else mentioned).....and so do I sometimes, but these are the things that we need to do the sport that we love. At least when I am older I won't be caught saying "I wish I had tried skiing".

In honor of Mother's Day - let me tell you about my awesome skiing Mom! :D aka -> lilgeorg

She didn't start skiing until she was 40. She is definitely a better technical skier than I am, and she looks better than I do in ski outfits. She moved to Vermont three years ago, just so she could ski more and she skied 50+ days this past season. She likes to sing on the chairlift and tell stories and jokes - And she gets better every year!!

I'm proud of you Mom, and I love you, and keep up the great skiing!

Your lovin' daughter ~ Lola

My mom used to ski. Unfortunately, her arthritis prevents her from skiing now. A very sad topic for her!

My mom was a great skiier and with my dad, taught me how....and gave me the love I have of it!

I love you, MOM!
Happy Mother's Day!

Yes, my mom skis. Less now, and she's a very fairweather skier, but that's okay! I'm glad she's out.

For the past 10 years, she kept using rental gear, because she said it was too expensive to buy new since she didn't ski much, etc.... Well, we forced the issue by buying boots and skis for Christmas, and she is SO MUCH happier. It really does make a big difference. :-)

My mom has lived her entire life in St. Louis, not exactly the best place to live if you want to ski. I think she tried skiing once. Mostly she and my dad played golf and sometimes tennis. My parents are both 80 years old and most of their exercise now is walking.

I don't think my mother quite understands why I like to ski so much. They live in Naples, FL for part of the year now and she is always suggesting we spend our boys' winter vacations where it is warm. We visit other times of the year instead!

It is my sons who will be the ones to say they have a skiing mom - actually - a skiing-obsessed mom!

Yes, my mother skis. She has always skied, and when I was little she always took me with her. Every weekend she'd drive a little VW through anything to get us to the hill.

She is a good skier. She easily and gracefully turns old school 185's. She can ski blacks, can ski all day, and can ski 6 days straight. She is always the first one ready to go. She loves the mountains and the fresh alpine air.

She live in Florida now and only skis 1 week a year. The rest of the time she bikes. She bikes about 100 miles a week.

She'll be 75 this year.
