If there's been old thread/poll, I apologize.

I'm just curious as to what everyone DOES, not WHY. But if you feel like giving a reason for your vote, feel free to do so.

I like my helmet. A number of reasons.
1. I've been hit by errant skiers, snowboarders, the odd tree limb and lift (t-bar to nose!!).
2. Its warm. I do ski at -20 deg C. Its Canada eh!
3. If I don't wear it, how can I explain it to students.

And I just bought another one, again with furry ears. So that makes a total of three. Think I'll sell the old Boeri at the swap next weekend.

I love my Giro Fuse helmet !! I find it to be more comfy than wearing a hat, they make my head itch .....
I have some speakers in it, but keep my tunes down low so I can hear things that happen behind me on the slopes.

I don't wear a helmet. Never have. I don't really see all that many people here in So. Cal. wearing them either (I don't think I saw a lot of people at Mammoth wearing them either, but I will pay closer attention next time I am there); mostly just snowboarders. But there is another post on this topic that I read (something about helmet hair, I think) and after hearing everyone's reasons for wearing them, I think I should. The idea is in my head and I foresee myself looking into it in the very near future.

I was sure we'd done this thread already, but damned if I can find it! Anyway, a good topic for discussion, even if it's a re-run.

I wear a helmet all the time now. Started a few years ago, after my daughter suffered a concussion while snowboarding. Now I wouldn't think of going without one -- just as I wouldn't think of biking helmetless, either. I think it's pretty common here in the east, maybe because of all that ice -- erp, I mean hardpack?

Anyway, I think it's a good idea. I've had a fall or two where I got up thinking I was glad I was wearing a helmet. They're warm, not uncomfortable, and they keep you safe. So the downside is what?

Yeah, I remember the thread. The search function only goes back to May 2007, so it must have fallen out of the archives.

Anyway, last season was my first season wearing a helmet. Always wore a hat before that. I must admit that helmet is nice to wear. It's warm, very light weight, and gives me a little extra confidence when going into the steep trees. I wear a helmet riding my motorcycle, so why shouldn't I wear one while skiing?

Yes I do - I was kind of bullied in to it when being fitted for boots this year when the fitter saw my bruise running from ankle to hip - I was told in no short terms that I'd better get myself a lid.

Love it now - have the furry-ears variety and it knocks the pants off a hat for keeping my head warm!

I wasn't looking to start another debate. It's a pretty clear cut case, albeit more applicable for some than others. I guess I'm also curious to see what percentage of this board's participants do comparing with the percentage I see on the slope.

My head hadn't touched the snow since the last time I took a snowboard lesson. And only once prior (snowboard lesson). In short, I don't see it as so much a safety item than a cold weather "clothing" item with added safety benefits. I'll keep my eye out for the furry ear when I go shopping, now that I read TWO recommendations for its benefits. Yes, I also ski in pretty cold weather in the northeast.

I'm more curious to see how many don't even though they maybe "planning to".

Yup.

Funny story. I was skiing out at Breckenridge last season and The Boy and I found a small pipe on a side trail we hadn't known was there. Usually I don't go into those, but since it was a little one and the trail was mostly empty, I decided to play. We paused by the entrance and two other boarders came up. We offered to let them go first but they were all, 'Oh no, you guys go first, you're better than us'. And we were confused, because suffice to say we are (neither of us) the best freestyle skiiers, to completely understate our lack of prowess in the park. We asked them why they thought we were good, and they told us it was the helmets. I guess wearing a helmet means you are skiing/riding the steep and nasty? I tried to point out that you'd need a helmet as much or more on a beginner trail with some of the reckless people out there, but it went over there head.

Then I dropped into the pipe and snowplowed my way down it.

:humble:

I'm so hardcore!

I crashed into trees. The helmet probably saved my life.
I won't ski without one anymore.

abc - Salomon has the furry ears - 2 styles Icon and Divine. As for helmets they are mandatory in the freestyle parks now in Quebec and I think the rest of Canada is following the lead. So I suspect that all parks will need helmets to get in. Yep there is patrol at the entrance to the parks at Tremblant most days. As an instructor I thought that I would never wear the helmet teaching, but I did last year as the ears are soft and I can hear my students.

Like my cycling helmet, couldn't imagine life without it! Was taken out by boarder and my neck still hurts - 7 weeks later - I was concussed, so could not imagine how I would be now without it. It is warm, light - and round - I look like Marvin the Martian, but hey - those attack lifts, trees, etc can't get me!

Hell, yes! See my various posts on my accident. Skiing 35 years, over a million vertical feet each of the last four years, 73rd day of the season, green trail, on piste, had just stopped about 15 feet before the collision, so couldn't have been going very fast. If you can get hurt under those conditions, it proves that no one is safe.

I considered skiing without a helmet when we were in New Zealand. Most people were skiing without helmets and seemed to be more comfortable in the warm conditions than I was. Then, someone dumped the skis on my head while we were unloading gear, and I decided to stick with the helmet.

For hiking, I wear a hat and sunglasses. Then, when the hike is done, I stuff the hat and sunglasses in my pack and put my helmet on before skiing.

I wear it all the time. I have done one run without in the 5 years I've been wearing a helmet, and I felt so weird I went back in and put it on.

I think it would be interesting to see the difference in poll results if this were to be posted on Epic. See what difference the men make.

Haven't used one but definitely buying one before the season starts. Trying to convince Mr. Ski Spirit and others of importance .
