Do you ski without poles?

Never fails -- whenever I go skiing, I invariably see one or two skiers with no poles. Me, I think I'd feel lost without them. They help me maintain my rhythm and mark my turns. What about you?

I don't, but I know some people do as a traning technique. When my friend was first learning to ski she was scared to point her skis down the fall line and so would just end up pushing herself back and forth across the hill with her poles. After a few hours of that our friend took her poles away. That helped.

Well I had to do it once, as my husband forgot to pack my poles, because he wasn't using his. He was on his supercraver Head's and doesn't use them when he skis those skis. All I told him was he was helping me get up if I fell. I use alot of no-poles exercises in teaching, but I don't regularly ski without them. Like SkiDiva says, it helps with co-ordination and timing. Also getting from point A to B and getting up after a fall.

Also for getting a good skate going on the flats!

I use them to pull my Boarder Boy across the flats and runout sections of warmup trails.

Sometimes I'll even let him use them to push himself along and I'll just skate ski.

I love to ski without poles. My legs and feet move so much faster and more smoothly when my pokey arms arent' holding them back. Plus, I ski alot on snowblades - so no poles then, either.

CSCF - the canadian coaches federation did an experiment with Thomas Grandi. They asked him to race a course with and without poles. The time was faster without the poles!!
