Do you NOT wear a helmet?

Seems like helmets have become a normal part of ski wear over the past few years. But some people still don't wear them. Is there anyone here who doesn't? And if not, why not? I'm just curious.....

I don't wear a helmet when I teaching. Can't hear my students. But any other time, yeah - I've been hit too often and they're warmer than toques, oops, ski hats. (Canadian eh!)

I have worn a helmet for the past two years.
Wouldn't think of NOT wearing it.

Except, as Jilly says, when I take my church school kids skiing.
When I take the school kids, I wear my "cat in the hat" hat.
The reasons are numorous, not the least of which is visibility. My students can always find me with my big goofy hat!

Helmets for bicycles, motorcycles, inline skating and DEFINITELY for skiing!

Heck, if I thought I could talk them into it, I'd have my kids wear hekmets while riding in the car. :o

I wear a helmet. This fall I checked mine for cracks and found a long one in it, from nape of neck all the way up to my forehead. Who woodha thunk? This crack was definitely not visible on the outside. I only found it when I removed the inside padding just to take a look. Bought another one immediately.

I acutally think I know when I did this damage - at the BEGINNING of last season, before New Years, at Attitash while vainly trying to keep up with faster, more experienced skiers on sloppy early season snow. I fell backwards, and oh boy was I dazzled for a while. No concussion - the helmet saved me.

So now I know to check out the inside of the helmet after every big head bang (and hopefully there won't be any!) I hope to never naively go through an entire season again with a faulty helmet.

Good catch, Liquidfeet!

Ski helmets are made to crush under impact. They crack so your head doesn't. :D

I love my helmet. It's warm and keeps the rain off my head. It has earflaps to keep my ears warm. It holds my goggles so when I crash, they stay with me. It protects me from out of control people and from myself!

I don't wear a helmet--cuz I don't have one and never really thought about it before. I think they have just come into "fashion" the past few years and we haven't been skiing that much the past few years. Silly--but I always thought about it as a kid or snowboarder thing. But I've been thinking of getting one this year--heck--new skis--new boots--might as well add new helmet to the list. Anyone have any suggestions as to what kind?

I wonder if helmets are more of an east vs west thing. I haven't been west for a couple years, but the last time I was there (2 seasons ago) -- and all the times before that, as a matter of fact -- I seem to remember thinking that helmets were less prevelant than they were in the east. Maybe skiers don't think they need them as much, given the soft, powdery snow instead of our eastern hardpack. :D.

I could be wrong in my perception entirely. And if I'm not, maybe things have changed.

I haven't worn one, but I'm planning on getting one this season. (Finally found a style that I liked)

After all, I wear one while motorcycling, so it only makes sense to wear one while skiing. Especially now that I'm venturing more off-piste.

One concussion was all it took for me! And let me tell you from experience, it wasn't fun.

Do yourself a favor: If you don't have one, get a helmet!

Never bike, board, or ski without one. Taking gates in the face and getting wacked by out of control boarders convinced me!

Hubby was wearing his while race training, got wacked by a gate and still got a concussion. I'm thinkin' he'd be dead if he hadn't had the helmet on.

SkiDiva, we bought our helmets after a trip to Whistler. Everyone seemed to have them. That would have been 5 years ago. I'm on my second one as I didn't like the hard ears. Love my Salomon ladies with the furry ears pieces.

Same here. Wear one biking, skiing and on the motorcycle. Don't ride behind my husband much anymore. Too scared. The taxis in Manhattan are crazy and after losing a family member to a motorcycle accident, it makes the fragility of our existence very real.
The speeds that even moderate intermediates attain could be the cause of brain injury without a helmet. Especially with one-sided boarders, it is crazy to ski without one. It doesn't matter how well YOU ski, it matters how well everyone around you skis.

Well, it's time to retire the old knit hat. Went out and bought a helmet and new goggles today. Hubby got a set too. Now we're set to hit the slopes again. ;)

Yay, Lori! You'll find that it's really very comfortable and warm. And after a while, you'll wonder why you ever skied without it.

I haven't skied in the east in a few years, but I think I see more people with them than without them in the west.

A friend of a friend we know skied into a tree and broke his back. The only thing that saved his life was his helmet. And get this...he was back skiing the next season. I had no idea you could recover so quickly from a broken back!

I gave in about 2 years ago, but I do like my helmet and now I don't like to ski without it. I saw too many people coming through the facility where I work with head injuries from accidents. They just never seemed to be the same as before their injuries. I also witness too many people getting mowed over by careless boarders/skiers who don't know what a responsibility code is.

Hi everyone! I'm the fng, but I wanted to add my 2 bits.

I've worn a helmet for the past 2 seasons, always ski with it now. I orignally got one to wear because my son is always in the park and we (the ex and I) bought him a helmet to wear. But as all smart kids, we soon learned that if we weren't with him, he had the helmet off. So we both bought one and said if mom and dad are wearing a helmet at all times, so are you! And if we catch you without it, you won't ski for the rest of the day!

I know that sounds harsh, but my son is on the ski hill fri nights, sat and sun every week. We made our point and now he wears it all the time. It's all covered in stickers, he constantly tells me that mine in booring becuase I have no stickers :p

After hearing of two kids dying from head injuries while skiing within a relatively short time, my husband and I got helmets for all. We knew that unless "the parental units" set the example, it wasn't going to happen.
Now, my 25 yr old son would never considering skiing without one. He's my more cautious kid. Our 16 yr old daughter tried to ditch it a couple of seasons ago, but we stood firm.
Initially, I wasn't looking forward to wearing a helmet, but I find it surprisingly comfortable and comforting!

A MUST!

I don't think it's a west vs. east thing....I think it's a "when did I start skiing thing!" If you grew up not skiing with a helmet, then it just didn't seem like it was necessary......until you learn differently.

After sustaining a very serious closed head injury in 2003, I have been in physical therapy, cognitive rehab and speech therapy and have only returned to the slopes 1 time....the first time I was able...on my birthday last March!

I tell you what, it was a freak accident! I have been skiing for over 36 years and NEVER worried about my safety, but the carelessness of a few (including employees of the mountain) proved me wrong....and changed my life forever.

My advice...wear a helmet! You will not regret it, and it will save your life!
