Ski Diva Extraordinaire
I have no photos, because it was snowing and the wind was blowing about a million mph, but I took my daughter (10) and her friend (9) on their first cat trip over on Tucker Mtn at Copper yesterday.
First of all, this was a neat day for DD because she was getting to ski with a GIRL instead of all boys, as usual. She has a good friend who skis with Team Summit, but this precludes their getting to ski together on most weekends, due to ski team commitments.
Since the season is over, though, we were able to get the girls together and I took them on a powder-hunting expedition at Copper. First we skied fresh tracks on Buzzard's Alley (we took the cheater's way off Mtn Chief), then back up and over to Copper Bowl ... when we got down, we saw that two cats were running, so I asked if they wanted to try it. I didn't really expect them to agree, because kids don't really like to wait in line, but they were game.
Anyway, we hiked to the Taco. The weather on the ridge was pretty nasty. A nice man helped carry one pair of their skis, and I carried the other, so they didn't have to schlep everything up there. (He was repaying us because I made the girls squeeze into one cat seat, and he was the lucky recipient of the extra seat.)
There was much much windblown snow in the Taco, as well as whatever was falling, so it was quite deep in places. At one point, DD's friend shouted, "It's over my thighs!" Again, she's 9, so it was only about knee-deep for me, but still nice!
So we finished, and I was still a little nervous due to the wait in the cat line and the hike. The hike wasn't too long, maybe 10 or 15 min, but in some nasty weather with little visibility, and at high altitude -- they are still little girls, after all.
But as it turns out, they were PUMPED. :D
