I'm not certain, but I think they read the chart something like:

1) find your weight
2) find your height
if they are in two different rows, go with the letter closer to A
3) find your sole length
If you are a Type I skier, this is your DIN
If you are Type II, go one row down (closer to Z)
If you are Type III, go another row down.

and if you're age 50 or above you also move up one space. If the space is blank when figuring Skier type, boot sole length, height and weight, you move over to the right or left.
