DH needs new skis and he's stubborn!!!

Some background: DH is a GREAT guy. I've realized as the years go by how lucky I am.

But....he's stubborn. And I'm the gearhead, he isn't. Except when it comes to tennis racquets (he was a college player).

But those Divas who were at Okemo Diva Day may recall that he was skiing on those little Atomic 120's....you know those little skiboards or whatever you want to call them. Actually, I bought them for myself years ago just to play around on. And he "borrowed" them and adopted them as his primary ski!

He skis them without poles. It's annoying in the lift line. Skiing on these things is OK on our local hill which is small. But when we're on a big mountain and the conditions get variable, then he can get hung up, and slowed down. A foot of pow at Whiteface this year tricked him up. He wouldn't admit it, despite getting snagged on fluffy bumps and stashes, which were fun for me.

I've told him he needs REAL skis. And he is starting to listen, although he told me to just get the bindings readjusted on an old pair of 1080's I have and he'll use those for the time being (which will be next year). The 1080's are a bit short for him - they're 163's and he's 5'9" 195 lb. Although, maybe it's not a bad transition since he's been on, uh, 120's???? But they've lost a bit of their pop, which is why I retired them.

Since he likes to do 360's on his little skis, I figure he'll enjoy twin tips. He's not really a hard-charging skier, he likes to play. I considered just going to my local shop (great people) and talking to them about ability/size, and buying him some twin tips. I know enough about what would work in our PA hardpack and still be awesome at other mountains. (Line Prophet 90's or Volkl Bridges).

What do you divas think about buying a DH skis? If he was a skiing gearhead I'd be definitely laying off (but then again, he wouldn't have these 120's as his primary ski!)

At the very least, how can I convince him that he really needs longer, "real" skis???????

This is beside the point, but I LOVE this thread! It's the mirror image of the "What skis do I buy my wife" threads you always see over at Epic! :becky:

Anyway, my husband isn't much of a gear head, either. But I really wanted him to have wider skis to play with in the powder. As far as he was concerned, this really wasn't necessary. So for his last birthday I just went ahead bought him Atomic Snoop Daddys -- he hadn't tried them, and it was just a leap of faith on my part, based on the good reviews I'd seen. I got really lucky; turns out he LOVES them. So for me, it worked out.

Does he have a birthday coming up? Maybe you could try that, too.

His birthday's not till August, but if I found skis now and waited til then, or got skis then, it still might be great. He'd get a kick out of that.

Maybe I should call my ski shop and see what sizes of the Prophet 90 and Bridge they have left....I saw some in there last week.....

And you know, my DH loves the Ski Divas! So, advice from you ladies about why he needs REAL SKIS would be much appreciated!!!

I'm
actually really glad you brought this up. I have been searching deals online for my bf and am thoroughly confused-he is a beginner but strong and athletic. He doesn't really care what I buy him, as it will still be more cost effective than renting.

He needs REAL SKIS for the same reason my DH did -- so he could keep up with me and wouldn't be left out of the fun!!!!! Tell him you just love him so much you don't want to leave him behind. Worked for me. :eyebrows:

My husband's birthday is in September, and I got him his skis at a great end of season sale. Just hid them under a bed for the summer. Hey, if it doesn't work out, you can always sell them and get him something else!

Does he want to ski fast, and faster, as he improves? Does he want to tackle bumps, and trees and such? Go to skiing reviews online and start there, with beginner/intermediate skis and see what there is.

My problem isn't picking a ski for my DH, it's convincing him that he really DOES need it!

In that case, I'd go with what SkiDiva suggested. Definately just buy them for him, and his curiousity will do the rest. First, he wont be able to refuse the gift <afterall, he loves you!> Second, he'll want to check them out!

O2Gearshop has the Volkl Bridge in a 169 for $389.99 in their outlet section. https://www.o2gearshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=2_70_76&products_id=993 They have no shipping fees, and no tax.

He pretty much just wants to be able to ski! He wont be skiing trees or bumps anytime soon, pretty much just groomers--as that's what we have here. Just an all around enjoyable ski. I was pretty impressed with him at his first lesson, and I loved how excited he was.

I've been reading reviews and checking out epic to see what other "beginners" have started with, and I have it narrowed down a bit. I figure so long as I don't get him a ski that's too out of his league he'll be fine. Now I'm just watching prices drop!

I've got to recommend the public enemy : ). They are very forgiving..so the transition to longer skis won't be as harsh...they do everything except pure ice (what ski is great in those conditions). They are a ton of fun, you know how twin tips are...next season's are being marketed more as an all-mountain and renamed the K2 "Extreme" black topsheets w/ some kind of early 90's looking design (doesn't look bad in photos). You can probably pick a pair of this season's up for $200 this summer+bindings..$150-200? Good Deal, I am continually amazed with how versatile they are and what they put up with if I get sloppy for a minute...gentle reminders are good. They of course ski shorter than their length; I could have gone w/ the 159 or 163 for my purposes, opted for the 159 for quicker turns in trees+I got a great deal:smile: They go up to 179 I believe.

Yeah, my husband is the same way, in fact claims that it is the "driver not the car" so anyone should be fine on any equipment, " they just have to want it". For most sports, I ussually just have to go and buy him something. If he complains about how it performs, I pull the driver routine and use it on him.
