demo'ing skis

i am constantly advised to 'try before you buy' skis. however, i am always stymied by the lack of product available for demo when i try to do this. so it seems to be advice that is easier said than done. part of the problem is my height--5'2". and part is i am a strong advanced level skier. i keep getting shown skis that when i double check on the information they turn out to be intermediate level skis. my local ski hill has several 'girlie' skis available but only a couple appear to be the top end skis. the unisex skis (man skis) available are all too long for me to truly demo and get much out of it. over the years i've checked ski shops in salt lake, colorado, seattle area (i live there). where are all these demos i am supposed to be doing to be had?

Beyond your local/resort shops, check out the manufacturers website and see if they are promoting a demo day. Also check with the resort or shops if the manufacturers rep's are doing a demo day. They should be listed on the events part of a website. Our local shop tries to get all the lines he sells in for at least 1/2 day on our 220' bump. These are the vans, truck, and trailers with all the skis in all the sizes. The local shops will only demo skis they think they can sell later or that the staff want to ski. So look for a manufacturer's demo day at one the resort you use.

I'm thinking about going to the retail buyers demo days at Tremblant in February. Most of the skis manufacturers go to this. Its a chance for the ski shop people to demo next years skis. Our local shop only carries three lines - Atomic, Salomon and Rossi. Last year he had Elan, but they didn't sell well, so not this year. Check out events on the WB website to see if they are having any demo days that are NOT associated with "coast mountain sports", that's a major chain on the west coast. Didn't try the Scarlet, but did try the Siam 10. Thought it a great carver, all terrain model. I ski the Rossi Z5's and thought the Siam was equal. Really impressed with the Salomon women's line. If I go to NSIA I will be trying the K2's. I think the local shop needs another line.

I too am concerned about the available skis, and not just for demoing. I studied up and decided what kind of skis I wanted -- 165's or thereabouts, 14-16 meter turn radius, with a waist no thicker than 70 mm. Went to every single manufacturer's website, and wrote down the names of all the skis that fit this description. Then visited the four ski shops in my area to see what they had. Zero. Not only are these skis unavailable for demoing. They just don't have them. So of course they won't be available on demo days. What's up??????????

Maybe a trip to Michigan for a demo day at Nub's Nob is in order? Their list of available demos is here: https://www.nubsnob.com/demprogram.html

Then there's Boyne Highlands directly across the street offering demos on Salomon, K2, Volkl, and Elan, I think.

Come visit us and make a weekend of it! I'm sure SnowHot would join us too!

And both resorts offer Nastar too! ;-)

I'd be down for a demo day/gathering up at Nubs Nob! It's gotta be pretty hard to convince people to come to the midwest to ski, but maybe with the way the snow is in the east this year....

How's Michigan doing now?
