Demo Day for 2008 Skis

I did a marathon DEMO day at my ski area Thursday. I was exhusted when I finished my day. I skied on 10 different pairs of skis.
Conditions packed powder groomed with 5 inches of fluffy powder on top.
Background: Ski instructor for 25 years.
I skied on too many skis to remember the lengths of all the skis, I am sorry about that.

Nordica Olympia, Fat ski: FUN. This ski surprised me, it turns very easily and just floated through the powder. It also did whatever turn size I asked of it. You do need a wider stance because of the width but it is very user friendly. Divas out west you should look at this ski.

Elan Mag Wave, all mountain, 152cm 10 meter radius: easy to turn, prefered side to side S turns. I did get bounced around a bit at speeds in the beaten up powder dispite the fact that it is wide in the tip and tail. A fun ski.

Fischer Vision Breeze, 155cm 14 meter radius. I really liked this ski. It skis a lot like my Vision 70 very easy to turn, very forgiving, nothing bothered it it just kept turning no mattter what I asked of it.

Volkl Teirra, replaces the AC3: Pure GS ski. Fast smooth ski right down the fall line in a GS turn only. Prefers to be ridden on rails. Not forgiving.

Atomic Mama metron womens: This is weird to explain but this ski prefers to be skied from the talis. Don't get forward at all and you must ride rails. It would do Big S turns and run the fall line. Fast, Smooth, and stable. Not forgiving.

Salomon Siam Origins 154cm 11 meter radius: Pure slalom ski. Just like the Atomic it needed to be skied out of the tails, don't get forward. The Rep even told me to not get forward on it. Slalom turns straight down the fall line off the tails. It did not like any other turn. I was told Atomic and Salomon are owned by the same owner now. That might explain the wierd tail thing.

K2 One Luv: Pure GS ski. One speed. One turn.

Blizzard, an intermediate ski, sorry I don't remember the name, a slow ski that again only liked one turn and one speed.

Head Great Thang: Slalom ski, fast short turns right down the fall, ride the rails.

Goode Red: 155cm, Nice ski with turn options and speed options.

I am sorry to say this but I was left less than impressed. The only 2 skis that were really fun were the Nordica and the Fischer. I found that most of the skis were really ONE TURN and ONE SPEED. I skied them all very well and had fun but none of them jumped up made and me feel like I would want to ski them all day. My favorite ski is still my new Fischer Vision 70. If you have any questions let me know.

I'm guessing this would be the Olympia Conquer XBS - the Nordica Olympia covers their whole line of women's skis and the Conquer is the fattest at 84mm underfoot. Or did they have something new that's fatter?

Also, how tall are you?

In general, manufacturers seem to be making some progress with women's skis, but there are very few that I like. I guess I should be happy that there are at least a few good ones out there these days and that you had so many available to demo!

Hi altagirl,
I am sorry to say that I did not catch the full name. The rep just said that it was the Olympia fat ski and I did not know that the whole women's line was called Olympia until I went to the website today. The ski was green and I did not see it pictured on the website. They may not have the 2008 skis up yet. I am 5' 2" and 125 lbs. I know it was a 17 meter radius and about 160cm. It did not ski like a 17 meter radius at all, it allowed me to do a large variety of turns sizes very easily. It was a very nice ski one of the only ones I really liked all day. I had fun on it.

Interesting - sounds like it's probably something new that's not on the website.

Thanks for the info!

I glad someone else liked the Breeze. Salomon and Atomic are now owned by Amer Sports of Sweden. I'm suspecting that there will be a combination of engineering. The Siam Origin is an all mountain ski. I didn't find it to be a slalom, but it did like the snow, not the ice or hardpack. The edge to edge transfer took for ever!! Also I found the 154 too short (5'5, 160 lbs)the 160 was better. I didn't try the Nordica's this year as the line hadn't changed much from last year (07). You might have had the Victory. It was all mountain ski, with a wide waist. I was to try the Breeze again this weekend, but it R'd on Saturday and I didn't feel like driving to the shop to get them for Sunday. Next weekend.

The Nordica I was on was a Fat ski not an all mountian. The Salomon was a slalom ski it has an 11 meter radius.

Skigirl, you said you liked the new Fischer Breeze, but your 70 was still your favorite. Can you tell us how they differ? I'm still trying to get up north to demo before the snow is gone, and really would like to check these two out.

I would have to ski the Vision Breeze again to really break it down but the main thing for me is the radius. I like a slalom ski and my Vision 70 is an 11 meter radius and the Vision Breeze I skied was 14 meter radius.
