Crossover Toe

For many years the second toe on my left foot has impinged on the middle toe.

I had it straightened some years ago but it eventually moved back on top of its neighbor. I have myriad devices to keep it in place - various toe socks and straighteners. I even found a brand of ski sock that has separate toes. Currently it hurts (low level, not sharp pain) all the time. It often wakes me up at night.

Well, tomorrow morning that pesky toe will be amputated. This form of self mutilation has taken me a long time to accept. But the surgeon has done it a number of times, and says the normal reaction is regret at not having done it sooner.

Does anyone have a need for a drawer full of used toe socks???

Seriously I'm a bit nervous at the moment. Wish me luck. Maybe say a prayer. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks,

Barbara

Good Luck and a speedy recovery! Keep the future in sight while recovering.

I had a broken and diseased/dead bone removed from my foot in April. I know in the long run I will no longer have the constant discomfort and swelling and arthritic flare ups. I walked on it for 3 yrs til I found a doctor who could help.

I also have a toe that crosses under my big toe - right now tape and gel spacers are working.

Although I've never had a toe amputated I've had 2 foot surgeries in the past 2 years. It's opened up a world of happiness for me wearing shoes and ski boots. Good luck with everything, you'll be great and I'm sure will be so happy this is done and will be much more comfortable once healed.

It's done.

No pain yet. Foot is wrapped in a bulky bandage and I have a walking shoe.

I'm supposed to take my first pain pill at about 3 pm to "stay ahead of the pain". After numerous leg surgeries, I am very aware of the importance of doing that. The first time I did not and I truly regretted it. There's a time to be "macho" and this is not it.

Thanks for the good wishes. Stay tuned.

Oops, clinging was supposed to be counting

@skibum4ever - Glad you liked this. After I posted it I wondered if it might be too soon.

@Jenny no problem. This surgery was a long time coming and had to be done eventually. I probably should have done it last summer but after the long recovery from my broken leg, I couldn't face any additional downtime.

Compared to that, this is just a minor blip.

Well...I and my 19 toes have made it to Saturday. I no longer have to spend every minute with the foot elevated above my heart. Went out shopping yesterday, did some minor walking and didn't have much pain in the evening.

Adding insult to injury, my cell phone died. Apparently the touchscreen sensor stopped working. I'm so glad I have a tablet which I purchased recently. And we have an extra phone so I can make calls as I need to. But I'm still missing a lot of functionality. For example, I can access Words with Friends (WWF) but haven't yet managed to locate the actual 20 or so games I am currently playing.

Configuring a new phone without access to the old phone will be challenging and time consuming. I'm so glad this didn't happen while I was in Maui.

So today's walking will be into a couple of phone repair shops. Grrrrrrr.

Glad you had a successful surgery. Wishing you many healing thoughts and prayers. Ugh in regards to your cell phone.

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers.

Good news about my phone. I let the charge run out and of course the phone shut off. When I recharged it, I had all my functionality. Seems like the analysis of my problem was incorrect. Yay!!!

Foot is not painful despite a fair amount of walking yesterday. I'm still far away from any lower body exercise. And probably will be until the bandage is removed in 3 weeks.

I read this thread with great interest, since I have the same condition. I was told to give up skiing and kayaking because the dampness aggravated rubbing sores that developed where my toes crossed. A podiatrist said it is something up in your leg which pulls the big toe across, apparently genetic.

Coincidentally at about the same time I finally found footwear that accommodates my high arch support and has a really wide toebox for big bunions (also inherited). Now with no more pressure on the sides of my toes, the crossing condition seems to be easing. Since dry skin is key I dust baby powder between the first two toes, frequently. I use a drysuit for kayaking, and merino wool socks for skiing. I'm hoping to put off surgery as long as possible.

I recommend searching for
"toe separators for women"
on Amazon. They have a lot of options and one might be perfect for your condition. Good luck.
