Crazy Talk

I noticed last weekend that I ski the bumps and trees much better when I'm either singing out loud or repeating something out loud. I have no idea why this is. :noidea: Maybe it helps me keep a nice rhythm, or maybe it keeps my mind off the fact that if I miss the next turn I'm going to crash into either a tree or a big mogul :fear:, or maybe I'm just crazy. I've always used little internal mantras when skiing, but saying or singing it out loud seems to work much better. So if any of you ladies also sing or talk to yourselves out loud while skiing please share so I can feel less like a crazy woman.

I sing to my mare when she's nervous, and I do the same thing when I'm skiing a scary run. At the very least it forces you to breathe.

Absolutely...I sing, I hum and I have been known to yell at myself (Turn YOU DUMB@$#%) Hee hee. It works!:becky:

When I ski bumps in the zipper-line fashion, I tend to stick out my tongue a la Michael Jordan or Pete Sampras. There is something to this that I read once, but can't remember, about being relaxed, and that's the most important thing I find in moguls. A weird combination of focus and relaxation. (The problem is that I'll probably bite off my tongue one day.)

But something about opening your mouth rather than clenching your jaw ... I think it makes sense.

I sing like crazy. On the slope, on the lift, in the lodge.....it drives hubby crazy, but all our friends and lift ops just expect it out of me. You should hear the stuff I yell at myself in the race course!!:loco:

I sing all the time when I ski, whether the I-pod's plugged in or not. I got hooked on singing while skiing at a clinic at Tremblant with a CSIA Level IV guy who made us sing to work on timing. I do that with kids all the time now; it's fun and it's a way to honor "mulitple intelligences." Some kids are super musical and respond well to skiing to a song.

"Pole plant. TURN. POLE PLANT. TURN!!!!"

:ROTF: All the time. If I'm having a bad day, I start talking myself down stuff. On steeper stuff, I end up vocally coaxing myself through, if I get freaked out. There's alot of, "COME ON ASHLEY, you CAN ski this, quit being a freakin' pansy!!" too. Mental :fencing:.

Yes, when I am feeling particularly challenged and freaked out, I sing a song, called 'Swallow' by Skindive, it's from a ski movie, awesome sequence. It helps focus me.

Add me to this group. I haven't tried the singing yet, but definitely talking to myself. Especially if I am at a new hill and don't know the terrain.

Not crazy! I hope :loco: I sing, too. I also squeak (in fear), giggle (at myself) and yell (inspirational ie COWABUNGA!) often.

When I'm in a weird funk I make dive bomber noises to get the frustration noises out of my head.

I haven't tried to sing in the bumps, but I should.
Who would think, "Wow, who's that crazy lady in the bumps"

At times when I am skiing moguls, I chant (er, mostly to myself) stab, slide, turn.

I did also say out loud a few times on a particular slope at Jackson Hole, what the f_ _ _ did I get myself into.

Sometimes when I am skiing I say to myself, "I am Batman." I am looking for a Batman sticker to put on my helmet....
