Conquer the Mountain

Well I finally decided that today was the day to try the Nordica Conquer's I bought last spring. These are the 2009 skis.

First me, 160 lb, 5'5, finesse skier, CSIA 2 working on 3.
Conditions: packed powder, hardpack, small bumps too.

The skis: 126-84-112, 162cm, 15m radius.

First these skis are wider in the waist then my usual skis at 74. Also the 15 m radius. And these things are heavy to cart around.

First impression - wow are these stable. Big wide turns and can do speed. Loved the packed stuff and crud. I found them too heavy for the bumps, or maybe its just me. I did find some "eastern hardpack" aka ice, but not blue. They did kinda slide and not hold the edge. Didn't like short radius, they were alot of work to do. Didn't surprise me with the radius though.

I think these puppies might be making a trip out west. I do want to see what they do in an "eastern powder day". And that could be tomorrow!! (4-6" called for here at Tremblant!) So this review will be ongoing!!

Well, in order of width, I have K2 Lotta Luv, Nordica Conquer, and K2 Phat Luv. I have not yet skied the Conquers in powder and now that I have the Phat Luvs, I'm not sure what part they will play in my skiing. The Lottas are great all-mountain skis, and the Phats for powder.

I really enjoyed the Conquers on packed powder and will have lots of fun trying out the different combinations in different conditions this winter. There is a chance that the Conquers may be good for CO packed powder, and I may need the Phats for Mammoth powder (aka "Sierra Cement").

I'd love to know what you think of the Conquers in different conditions.

Got out the Conquer's again today. Its spring skiing here in the east. These skis like snow. They would carve through it like a knife on butter. But they do not hold well on ice. The freeze up was starting on some of the runs. Again they like speed and after spending yesterday on my Z'5's I found these Nordica's stiffer than them too. It takes a few runs to get used to the wider waist and length too. Lucky for me we were skiing with a friend on the CX80's. So our turns were similar. Think I'll ask the rep about the Firefox, or Foxfire which ever it is!

I think I've put the Conquers on my demo list for this year. Now I just need to find a place to demo them.

Skied the Conquers at Keystone yesterday. 4" of fresh pow which quickly got chewed up, packed powder, a little ice, a few moguls with rocks in between. Conquers handled it all perfectly. Even hubby said I was skiing well. Now he's starting to see why I need a quiver vs. the "one ski wonder" we have skied up to last winter, when I started experimenting.

It does make a difference when you have the right tool for the task(as if skiing is a task )

The Conquer is one of the skis I demoed and thought would fill a nice gap for the fresh snow/crud/mix it up days.

They were excellent today at Vail.

Of course, the snow at Vail is so wonderful I'm not sure if what I had on my feet really mattered! :ski2:
