Congratulations! I have met several CMC students while riding the lifts at Steamboat. They were very enthusiastic about their school. They seemed very sure about what they wanted and proactive about their education. I know nothing really about the school per se, but I was impressed with those students.

CMC offers experiential education programs - so a lot of hands-on work with studies. I think they have environmental studies programs, emergency technician, ski resort operations, forestry, etc. Most of the programs are 2-year associate programs. They have a bunch of campuses, some are residential. I just remember things about it because when I was at the University of Colorado, there were some undergrads there that transferred into a 4-year program from CMC to CU.

So, whether you go there depends on a)what you want to study and whether you want a 2-yr. associates or a 4-yr bachelors degree; 2) what kind of learning environment do you want - traditional or hand-on; 3) what are the placement records of the school; i.e. how many of their graduates go on to find good jobs in their desired fields?

Those are some of the things you need to consider. I would visit the campus of your choice, if I were you, and see it firsthand and talk to faculty there. Considering the amount of snow now in CO, you could always work in a Diva outing in the process, I'm sure.

I bet some of the CO Divas know a lot more about it, though.

Congrats!!! do you have a specific program you are looking at or is it to just get you started on your college experiance? Is your acceptance to the Steamboat campus or can you go to any of the CMC schools? I took some art classes at the Edwards (Vail) campus. I don't know much about the Steamboat campus (except to say that I LOVE the town of steamboat) The Vail,Edwards and Eagle campuses are all brand new and very nice. Teachers were great and admin was very helpful in getting me enrolled. If you are looking to extend studies beyond the two year programs understand that the CMC credits very easily transfer to other CO colleges.

I think you may have posted it, but what *ultimately* are you going to school for? I think this may sway your decision as to whether or not this would be a good school for you.

One thing to check when going to a 2yr school for an associates or in preperation for a bachelor's... arrange a meeting with an advisor regarding what your major will be, and make certain that the classes you take at CMC will be transferrable to a 4yr school.

Although I still haven't finished my degree, when I started going to a CC after coming home early from college, this is what I did. I knew immediately what classes I should be taking, and which ones would transfer and were accepted as "prerequisites" for higher classes at a university. I didn't want to waste my time, and certainly not my money, taking classes that were useless <unless of course they were just fun!> and wouldn't allow me to exhaust my opportunity at the CC before transferring to a 4yr school.



Definately something to look into.

Roaring Fork, in Glenwood, if any. Still waiting on acceptance letters from a couple schools in Montana, before I made an absolute commitment, but I really like CMC the best. I was totally set on the Steamboat campus, for the Ski Business major, but the industry that I would end up working for really isnt my thing, so Glenwood, because they have the photography major...

Like I said, I'll need people to ski with....


There's a thread over at Epic about this, under a similar title, if you want to look at it, I went into a lot of detail about my major choice and why I want to go to CMC.

When I started looking at the school, I was thinking about majoring in Ski Area Business or Operations. But I have always been more of a writer/photographer, and so I will be majoring in photography/film. I don't necessarily need a degree to be a photographer, but it will help. I think that the hands on approach of the 2-year program at CMC will be an awesome experience as a media student. I'm not positive that the credits will transfer to a four year, still working on that... =)

After the program, I have some friends who work for the local papers and we also use freelance photographers here at SkiCo. (You will hear SkiCo a lot when you move here.)
