Chewed out crazy skiers

I almost got double whammied yesterday by two 12 or 13 year olds.....I was doing a falling leaf exercise across a pretty empty hill, then stopped towards the edge to adjust my boots. Suddenly I heard two girls screaming at the top of their lungs....barrelling straight down in snowplows, very fast and wobbly looking, one on each side of me about 2 feet or so away. I had nowhere to jump to so I just stayed put and waited for the worst. Their parents were just behind them. I was furious.....they went back up the lift and I did too....and went right up to mom and dad and asked if their kids knew any speed control, stopping or turning techniques. The mom said "They're just having fun...." So I laid it on about the danger of what they were doing, skiing so out of control and fast AND nearly hitting people all the way down, and suggested they get some lessons for their daughters. The parents seemed surprised but contrite, and immediately got onto their kids. I watched them go down much more carefully (but I made sure to stay ABOVE them), so hopefully they'll be more aware. I was polite but firm with them, but I really wanted to scream at the parents "YOU IDIOTS!!!" :yell: :yell:

Well....I'm curious.....

Were the girls or their parents wearing helmets?!?! If parents are going to let their kids "JUST HAVE FUN"....hopefully they are doing it in helmets!

Good for you! :yahoo:

One person CAN make a difference!

Nope, no helmets at all!!!!! They parents were moderately ok skiers, but just oblivious to their kids and any possible danger. I should have mentioned the young girl killed recently at Heavenly Valley....

I just go bonkers over people who can't turn, can't slow down, can't avoid people, yet they get on hills that are too steep for their ability.

Alas.....Really common, really aggravating....I had one of those get stuck between my skis once, forcing me to "carry" her down the hill w/me. Did a lot of yelling, likely to no avail.

Kids have no sense of mortality or danger at young ages. Many of them love speed. It's really the job of the parents to moderate, but when they don't see the danger themselves......well.....what can you do? But in the future, I'll speak up to people where I can. For whatever help that may be in changing dumb behavior!!! :noidea:

This didn't happen at Big Sky did it? I had a similiar incident in H.S. only I was the dumb kid having fun. I am pretty sure that I was skiing with the lady between my legs though, maybe it was the other way around. Long time ago, can't remember. Was it you???

Ha! Nah. It was at a small Midwest resort, on a weekend night, and the kid was younger, maybe 12. No control. I told her to just wrap her arms around my lower legs, keep her skis flat (she was sitting on her tails) and STFU. Lecture came when we arrived at the bottom. Sheesh.

She is lucky all she got was a lecture, I am pretty sure I got my ticket pulled that day. Parents not real happy either, tickets at Big Sky were Big Money. I am pretty sure I had the lady between my legs though, I think at the time it seemed like a better idea than just running into her....and I didn't hurt her. I will reflect now on MSL's signature quote and beg for mercy.....
