Cell phones & skiing

Who brings a cell phone skiing?

I have to admit I do, but only to check for messages during lunch.

It amazes me how dependent we've become on them in such a short time. Is it impossible for you to get away, or do you leave it behind?

I do, but only to keep in touch with friends I'm skiing with as they are usually on different trails than me. That way, if something goes wrong or if one of us wants to leave earlier than planned, we can get in touch with each other.

That's a good idea, but it doesn't work where I ski. Most of the time I don't have reception on the mountain. Cell phone service can be pretty iffy in Vermont.

Anyone use those walkie talkies?

That is usually the case for the mountains around here, too, but again, we've got the phones if we need them and can use them.

Comprex has used the Motorola 7400 and swears by them. They seem to be much more reliable than the phones. If anyone is looking for a set of walkie-talkies, Target, I think, currently has a set with an 18-mile range on sale. Unfortunately, I forget the brand. If anyone's really interested, I'll check the circular when I get home and post the details.

I'll have the cell phone with me, but its to keep check on elderly parents, or guests coming in to meet us. Other than that we use walkie-talkies on the mountain. The range is great, especially if someone is on top. Last year a friend was trying to raise his wife and got us on the radio. We didn't know he was up and he didn't know we were there. Our group of friends all use the same frequency and it great to keep track of people since we may not all ski the same runs, side of the mountain or time. Mine has an earpiece. Hubby and I started using them when we went to Whistler 5 years ago. He went one way around a tree, I went the other and couldn't find him. After that I wired him for sound.!!

My husband and I run a sewer and septic service. I transer my business phone to my cell phone so I can leave the office and hit the slopes.
Some say the phone ties me down, but to them I say, it's given me a lot of freedom, because the alternative is stay home by the land line phone.

Imagine you are one of my customers with a sewer back up and I didn't have the phone handy

No cell phone here...skiing or otherwise.

Would have come in handy a few times, reception in MT is too spotty. Walkie Talkies are nice, but I find having a meeting time for lunch and then the apre-ski works best. That way everyone can do their own thing.

I don't own a cell phone either.

We use walkie-talkies. They make reuniting convenient when we lose eachother.

I always bring it with me but rarely does it work on the mountain. Yes SkiDiva you are correct about the reception in VT. I was at Smuggs for a long weekend in March and my cell phone had no service the entire time, I actually had symptoms of withdrawal. I'm a Realtor so my phone is an extra body part. When it is working I keep it on vibrate and if I get a call I can at least be notified without disturbing others and if I need to return a call I do so when I'm stationary.

Cell phones are a mixed blessing. I need one when I am on call; I use it instead of a beeper. When going out west, it usually works and if i take a more difficult trail than my husband, we can find each other.
When up in vermont, yup, its very iffy. I like Sugarbush and there is not much reception in the valley.
On the other hand, its been nice to be up on a mountain, pull over and check in with family at home. My husband and I did this in Utah. Called to see how things were at home with our teenage daughter.
Tried the walkie-talkies a few years ago, but the range was less than cells, in general.
Definitely interested in the ones with the 18 mile radius. Sounds like a "tarjay" deal.

Walkie talkies for us. I found it the best way to stay in touch with the kids when they were off doing their thing (on the Mtn) and we were off doing ours. At the time the kids didn't have cell phones. Now they've all got one so maybe we'll switch? Lots of comments here about no reception on the Mtn in VT. How about in CO? Just wondering when we hit Breckenridge in Jan whether we need to pack up the old walkies (if I can even find them).

Can't speak for what it's like over the entire mountain, but I've had fine cell phone reception where I've tried it in Breckenridge. Better than Vermont. Go figure.

I don't carry a cell phone skiing, they get very spotty reception where I ski. I do sometimes carry a walkie talkie, but prefer not to. I have enough stuff in my pockets as it is. I also don't like digging for it when someone calls or having to stop to answer it. The reception for walkie talkies isn't always good at my area and it seems that no matter what frequency you pick, people are always chatting and using the beep signals, which I also find annoying. If you turn the noise down, then you can't hear people calling you.

Walkie talkies and mobiles for us. The walkie talkies to keep the roamining mobile bills to a minimum (a 3-figure bill for one month isn't much fun) but the mobile for safety reasons. In Europe, although every country has its own emergency numbers, there is a universal number - 112 - which calls out the emergency services in any country. Nearly rang it on Sat when it became apparent that the gondola had broken down while full of people (didn't need to in the end as the lifties already knew).

I carry my cell phone on the slopes, but ski in New Hampshire and VT and thus rarely have any reception. When it rings, I jump, and I'm surprised and embarrassed if anyone's nearby. But I have gotten some important calls, and taken them, and I'm glad of that when it happens.

Two stories - the time I answered the phone while I was on the chairlift alone, and dropped it. Bad, bad, bad. I had an awful climb up under the lift forever past five lift towers to retrieve the thing, and of course it was buried in 8" of snow. But I did persevere and found it, only to drop it in the toilette later (go figure ... interesting day). It somehow survived.

Second story - got a call from my daughter while at Killington, tucked the phone under my helmet against my ear, and skied off talking. When she realized I was breathing hard, she hung up on me! I really coulda done it. She has no respect....

Don't own a cell phone. We had one and used 6 minutes the last month we had it. I said, "Honey, at $40 a month, that's some pretty spendy talking!"

We have walkie talkies, but we don't use them much. We can see each other from any run on our small hill (two, and when we travel, we ski together in case one of us gets maimed, we don't have to ask strangers for help.:o

The new helmets with tune-ups have an attachment for your cell phone too so you can answer it without worry.;)
My phone is not compatible with my tune ups but most phones are.
Cool, Huh?
