Ski Diva Extraordinaire
Yup, we braved the lower Northeast this weekend despite the torrential downpours we received during the latter half of last week! After some pep talks from some Divas, I was convinced that as long as we were prepared for lots-o-ice, we'd be fine.
And we were. It was great. Conditions? No, not so great. But that first day out there is always fun. It was definitely weird because half the mountain was just dirt and grass - not a trace of snow. But they had done a fair job at snowmaking post-rain and it really wasn't awful. They had 14/32 trails open.
The best part (and I apologize in advance for the lack of pictures - I know my description will not do these scenes justice) was the ice at the top of the mountain. It seems the rain turned to ice there and just coated the trees in ice. The tiniest branches were encased in at least an inch of it, and the trees that weren't snapped were bent over under the weight. It looked like a competely strange, completely beautiful alien planet. We could see over the entire top of the mountain because if the way the trees were bent over, and when the sun sparkled over it, it was just stunning. I WISH I had my camera! :(
So, back to conditions. It was okay. All man-made snow and hard-pack & ice underneath. We really got to test our edges! My Dynastar ELs impressed me again. DH had a little bit of a harder time on his K2 PEs, but overall, we both felt great and were just happy to be out there.
Can't wait to get out again!
