So it was ski day number 4 on the season - some factors beyond my control have kept me from getting out as much as I might have liked so far this season but I've been trying to get the most out of the days I've gotten. This was our first ever trip to BW and we knew we were really pushing our luck going on what should be one of the busiest days of the season - Sunday on a long weeked at the begining of MA vacation week.

The conditions were great. We could feel that there was some ice under at points but for the most part just beautiful snow - almost hero snow, but not quite. No death cookies, no frozen corderoy, no slush. What was pleasantly surprising was that although the parking lots were packed the trails were surprisingly open and free of crowds. We had some liftlines, but the worst was maybe 15 minute wait for the main quad so I really can't complain.

The mountain has a ton of terrain but is definitely focussed on intermediate terrain. I would argue their blues are some of the mildest I've skiied and although I did not do so today (there was plenty to ski otherwise) I wouldn't think twice about going onto the black single-diamonds at this mountain. It has a pretty laid back attitude - more like a small family mountain than a 100+trail promote ourselves as a resort. This is nothing like Sunday River, etc. But as I said above you may not find as challenging of terrain. However if you want a laid back day on the slopes where you never have to ski the same run twice even if you're not an advance skier this is a good place to go. We plan to return here again after this experience and try out more of the terrain.

Did you get to take any photos Persee? BW is on our 'East List' mostly because of the history behind the Mount Washington Hotel, but you know how it is, any excuse to ski!!

I skied Bretton Woods Sat, 2-16. Beautiful day of skiing. Stayed in the west side woods all day. It was wonderful! Soft snow, easy glades, lots of protection from the wind. I think it got all the way up to 11 degrees on Sat. so going slow among the trees was the warmest thing I could do. I hope Sun-Mon's rain doesn't destroy that beauty, but it probably will.

Unfortunately I don't tend to have a camera with me when skiing - then there's no incriminating evidence when I yardsale!:eyebrows: However Washington was in and out of the clouds all morning with the front approaching so the photos wouldn't have been great anyhow. I think I'm also partial to the view from Conway anyhow since thats the one I'm most well acquainted with. That whole region of NH is really beautiful to drive through. If you do go I would advise taking a side trip to the west - downtown Littleton is a really charming former mill "city" and the center of Bethlehem is just sweet. Also don't miss Sugar Hill with it's beautiful houses and views.

More MWH pics available upon request. Built in 1905. The place is amazing, second only to the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island (which is jaw-dropping).

It's nice in the summer to go to the MWHotel and eat out on the back patio. Prices are just normal, and the views and ambience are phenomenal. I always try to do this when taking out of state visitors up there to see the sights. You can also go for Fourth of July, and do a picnic on the grounds and watch the fireworks.

^^^ That goes on my to-do list this summer! LF, have you tried that Zip Rider cable ride at Wildcat yet? It opened last July. What a hoot! I did it in September. Was supposed to stay open for winter, but I don't think it is. A bit nippy  ! I just love the whole region - one of my favorite places on earth.

Well, actually, the zipper line IS open. But skiing there is such a hoot with all this snow, I'm not sure I want to take away any of my precious time on the slopes to sit in a harness and slide down a cable. The sound it creates overhead as we ski is pretty odd. I've been skiing there every Sunday, actually, so I've seen lots of folks riding that thing.

Last Sunday the snow was back to normal -- I passed over (wouldn't say skied) large areas of blue ice, and went down trails of "New England Packed Powder," aka ice. I wonder if we'll continue to get snow thru Feb and into Mar ... think I'll go check the weather.

^^ I'll be darned, it is open. I'd agree with passing on doing it in the winter, for sure. I went at the height of fall color season in the Notch, it was gorgeous. Looks like some snow moving our way around weekend - let's hope.
