I think I have gotten the first pair of boots that actually fit me and the proccess was relatively painless!!!
I have been skiing on a pair of Solomon boots for approx 6 years. I bought them in a ski shop on Long Island (probably a big mistake). At the time, it seemed like the fitter knew what he was doing, and even gave me custom foot beds. About a year later, SO and I were skiing at Okemo, and wandered into Northern Skiworks. SO started talking to the bootfitter, a guy named Shon. Well, I wound up having him look at my boots, getting a fitting and he put in pads and cants all sorts of things, and I decided the next time I needed boots, I was going to this guy. Well, I had my first ski day of the season on Saturday at Whiteface, with plans to ski there on Sat and Sunday, then go to NH to visit friends and ski there. The days at Whiteface were BLUEBIRD! and I skied black diamond runs that I had always shied away from before. While doing that, I realized that my feet were slip-sliding around in my boot! When I asked SO if it would be out of the question to stop in Ludlow and find Shon on the way to NH, as I heard on this site that he was no longer at Northern, and had his own shop. We did, and, without an appointment, they fit me in (no pun intended), and although Shon didn't do the actual fitting, another person in his shop, Matt did. I am now the proud owner of a new pair of Atomic Hawks which, believe it or not are a full 2 sizes smaller than my old boots!!! They have custom footbeds and almost no other adjustments! I skied all day yesterday, and loved the fit, no hot spots, just a nice snug fit! I am going to stop by Shon's shop this morning as my old boots had heel lifts, and I did find myself sitting a little bit back, so I will talk to them about that. If anyone needs help with bootfitting, and are anywhere near Ludlow, VT, I highly recommend Shon at Boot Pro.
