Boot flex

Is there a standard scale for boot flex that can hep me understand the flex of my boots?

Head S8, adjusts from 6 to 7. But what do those numbers mean?

I was skiing with the flex on 7 on intermediate hills and it felt fine. So why would I need the 6?

Do you folks who have adjustable flex actually use it, or do you ski the same flex all the time?

Please educate me about flex because until recently I was unaware of it.

I've never tried a boot with adjustable flex. Unfortunately there's not a good standard scale between brands. You'll see a flex rating on a lot of brands, but most bootfitters have told me that it's really only accurate within the same brand.
