Does anyone else follow FIS World Cup Races?

Did you see Bode Miller ski the fence today and still make the podium? Can you imagine the damage that did to his skis and then race the rest of the course and tie for second!

This guy's unbeliveable! How can you not love this guy!

The guy's a NUTCASE!!! :loco:

Do you think he cares about the skis? That's up to his sponsor. I can't remember if he's Head or Atomic this year. But the guy is quite the personality. I didn't see if the guy that slide across the finish line got up. Did he?

Scott MacCartney. No he didn't, I heard he is being treated for a severe concussion and will be OK. I'm glad I missed his run, I heard his helmet came off or broke...

Didn't see a helmet. But trying to watch it a La Shack here at Tremblant and not viewing head on was a problem. Just saw a guy sliding down the hill and into the finish. He didn't look like he was in our century!

Now, what about Emily -3rd. And 2 others in the the top 10!

I watched the race. It was disturbing to see Scott crash on the very last jump. He was travelling at almost 140km an hour. He was banged around really badly and his helmet either broke or came off. He was obviously unconcious and suffering from convulsions/spasms.

The news report (about 10 hours old) said he was airlifted to a hospital in Innsbruck. They say he regained consciousness not too long after they airlifted him and is being observed for severe bruising to his brain (they hadn't operated on him as at that report). Poor guy, it was his 30 birthday today.

Bode put in an awesome run - skiing off the plastic part of the fence was unbelievable. Eric Guay had a good run as well, but Didier was incredible.

Quite something to watch the guys fling themselves down that hill. Apparently the celebrations in the London Pub at Kitzbhuel are legendary so I expect they've had quite the night. Celebrating their survival I'd bet.

We'd be lucky here in the states to get as much as a news flash of this --- with the football hoopla, skiing is not sports news :mad2: Up here in Maine, lots of people with good antennas are able to pick up Canadian stations, which DO show skiing. So please keep us posted.

US National Championships will be held at Sugarloaf this year, 3rd week in March. One of the few times I will brave a Saturday, if only to get a good spot by the fence at Narrow Gauge to watch this. It looks fast enough on tv - seeing it up close in person is mind-boggling. Bode's a hometown hero, as he went to (boarding) high school right at Sugarloaf at Carrabassett Valley Academy (a/k/a/ CVA).

Sure hope McCartney is okay........

Gee, I never thought I say we're lucky to get CBC Sports. But since the CBC's mandate is Canadian sports, we don't get the football now that the CFL is done. Just to show you the sport line up yesterday: Skiing, Canadian Figure Skating Championships, then 2 hockey games. And this isn't ESPN, its just like ABC, NBC etc. Most Saturday's they show a ski race or event (freestyle) from somewhere. Also they announced yesterday that Don Wittman had died. He covered 18 Olympic games. He was a true sports broadcaster.

Scott MacCartney is one lucky dude! It's the first time I saw the crash, JEEE-ZUSSS!

He says he remembers the race, but not the crash. He's going back to the US for a closer medical evaluation, but it appears he will return to racing.

Oh good lord! Twitching like that (seizures) NOT NOT NOT a good thing! Thank goodness it looks like he'll be all right. I don't think I could go back to skiing, let alone racing, after a crash like that!

I'm amazed that he's talking! I'm convinced that his helmet saved his life, not that any of us ski that fast (well, maybe VolklGirl) but it's a testament to helmet use.

I found this report in the Seattle Times. Gotta love a guy like that (even if he isn't racing for Canada!). Thank god he's OK. What a trooper !!

Two-time Olympian Scott Macartney of Kirkland said he has no memory of Saturday's crash that put him in an Innsbruck, Austria, hospital with a severe concussion.

Macartney, 30, was injured on the last jump of the World Cup downhill. "Maybe I didn't move forward enough or something, but I got out of balance in the air and crashed," he was quoted as saying on the U.S. Ski Team Web site.

Macartney slept through Saturday night "and I've kind of been dozing through the day," he said.

Of the timetable for his return, Macartney said, "It's hard to say at what point I'm coming back to racing. I'd like to get right back, but I have to take care of a couple of bumps and bruises."

He plans to return to the United States this week for further medical evaluation.

U.S. coach Phil McNichol said, "He's doing great, considering. His spirits are good. He's bummed because he crashed and lost what could have been a good result."
