bindings on used skis

I am interested in buying used skis, not too old, but cheaper than new.

Someone told me I need to have the same size boot as the seller of the skis, because the bindings are usually not adjustable.

Is this true???? Is it true of some bindings (I am interested in recent years only) or of all bindings?

The only bindings that are adjustable to all boot sizes are demo bindings. Of course using demo bindings also means that just anyone can steal your skis and use them without having to get the bindings remounted  .

Most bindings will have enough adjustability to fit boots 5-10mm larger or smaller than the length they were mounted for (this varies by manufacturer and model) although this may place the boot center point forward or rearward of the ski center point. It's actually not a big deal to have bindings removed and remounted to fit your boots...I had to have that done for my Karmas.

Holy Cow, listen to me. I am a gear geek!!

Bindings do have alot of adjustment that any good shop can do. If you are out of the adjustment range, re-mounts usually cost around $20.00 if the shop has the jig to do it. ie - they sell that brand of binding.

If I want those bindings remounted forward from where they were before, is that something that won't hurt the ski? What about all the old holes from previous mounts?

One remount won't hurt the integrity of the skis. Multiple remounts would. At our local shop, old holes are filled with glue. I've watched and help do remounts after our local ski swap. As long as the hole is sealed and no moisture can get into the core, its OK.

All bindings have a 'warranty' period set by the manufacturer, outside of that, most ski techs will refuse to work on them, so will not adjust them to fit your boots. But with skis/bindings only a few years old this shouldn't be an issue.

This could be what was meant by what you heard.

Thanks, ShellSki, that's something I'd never have known. Ebay may be too too risky with all these potential problems. Do you know how long those warranties last?

Indemnification

Indemnification (bindings warranty) varies between manufacturers and models. There's a list of all the currently indemnified bindings on the net. Gimme a few minutes and I'll hunt it up.

Anything on this list will still be servicable.

Anyone out there have this year's (full) indemnified binding list? I've hunted online, and the only one out there is a partial list- only Fischer, Salomon and (partial) Marker.

I just had bindings put on used skis this weekend. I too was intimidated by this process--drilling holes in an expensive ski seems very risky lol!

There was one set of existing holes that had been plugged for me by the vendor. The shop guy seemed unfazed by this. They just need to offset sufficiently-- so it is better if the last person had way bigger or smaller feet than you.

They drilled new holes to mount my new bindings. He assured me that when i replace my boots if the boot base is bigger within a size or so they can adjust without moving them. I will verify that with the boot fitter when the time comes.

Good luck with this!!!!!
